About this product

Hyperion presents a rarity in their ongoing Anglo-Australian artistic collaboration music by an Australian composer who was once at the heart of the English establishment. Malcolm Williamson was one of many Australian creative artists who relocated to Britain in the mid-twentieth century. Within a decade of settling in London he had established a reputation as one of the most gifted and prolific composers of his generation. However today, he is almost forgotten and his music virtually never performed. This set of his complete Piano Concertos is therefore an important document as well as a compendium of deeply appealing music. Piers Lane, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Howard Shelley are the ideal performers of these unjustly neglected works.

Piers Lane - Romantic Piano Concerto 75 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Ferdinand Ries may once have been celebrated as 'one of the finest piano-performers of the present day' (the 1820s), but he is now remembered chiefly for his association with Beethoven. Yet the music here is never slavishly imitative Piers Lane makes a persuasive case for rescuing these works from the pages of musical history. Ferdinand Ries is now remembered chiefly for his association with Beethoven. Volume 75 of Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto series highlights Ries's own Piano Concertos Nos.8 and 9. Piers Lane is joined by Leon Botstein and The Orchestra Now in performances that make a persuasive case for rescuing these works from obscurity.

Palm - Nicks And Grazes - CASSETTES

To confuse parts for the whole is inevitable with Palm. On their latest effort, Nicks and Grazes, Palm embrace discordance to dazzling effect. InchWe wanted to reconcile two potentially opposing aesthetics,Inch Kasra Kurt of the band says. InchTo capture the spontaneous, free energy of our live shows while integrating elements from the traditionally gridded palette of electronic music.Inch In order to avoid what Kurt refers to as InchPalm goes electro,Inch the musicians spent years educating themselves on the ins and outs of production by learning Ableton while also experimenting with Inchthe percussive, textural, and gestural potentialInch of their instruments. To this end, the band continued the age-old tradition of instrument-preparation, augmenting guitars with drumsticks, metal rods and, at the suggestion of Charles Bullen (This Heat, Lifetones), coiling rubber-coated gardening wire around the strings. The unruliness of the prepared guitar on songs like InchMirror MirrorInch and InchEager CopyInch contrasts with the steadfast reproducibility of the album's electronic elements. While Palm cite Japanese pop music, dub, and footwork as influences on this album's sonic palette, they found themselves returning time and again to the artists who inspired them to start the group over a decade ago. InchWhen we were first starting out as a band, we bonded over an appreciation of heavy, aggressive, noisy music,Inch vocalist/guitarist Eve Alpert reflects. InchWe wrote parts that were just straight-up metal.Inch Kurt adds, InchI found myself rediscovering and re-falling in love with the visceral, jagged quality of guitars in the music of Glenn Branca, The Fall, Beefheart, and Sonic Youth, all important early Palm influences.Inch Returning to the fundamentals gave Palm a strong foundation upon which they could experiment freely, resulting in their most ambitious and revelatory
