Pink Siifu's latest , GUMBO!, is another sprawling Afrocentric vision from one of the boldest voices in contemporary rap. Following up on 2020's NEGRO, the album's songs are as rich and varied as it's titular stew. Siifu's boundless style makes for an unpredictable but rewarding ride across the album's 18 tracks, as he explores the diverse sounds of his influences and breaks new ground with a unique class of co-stars. Siifu, born Livingston Matthews and raised between Alabama and Cincinnati, has already notched a conspicuous list of collaborations in his burgeoning career, from legendary producer the Alchemist to Australian electronic group the Avalanches. Siifu also embodies various inspirations through a range of alter-egos, often producing under the moniker Inchiiye,Inch or as half of the duo B. Cool-Aid with Ahwlee, both of which appear on GUMBO!. The variety of guest features and production on GUMBO! only elevates Siifu's ability to push the boundaries of genre and song structure. InchVoicemails UptownInch (produced by Soulection's Monte Booker) is the second of two back-to-back posse cuts, sporting five plus vocalists each. InchLng hair dnt care,Inch the album's first single, was produced by Ted Kamal, who first garnered attention for his outside-the-box edits of contemporary rap staples. And while several of the album's tracks are well within his bag, the jazzy, drumless loop on InchFk U Mean/Hold Me DwnInch could've been a cut off of his collab album with Virginia rapper Fly Anakin, FlySiifu's. Though rife with standout tracks, GUMBO! is greater than the sum of it's parts. Siifu's ambitious range and impressive pool of features create an otherworldly listening experience. On his album NEGRO DELUXE Siifu trades in soulful rap for punk, fueled by the Black experience in America followed by spiritual jazz and poetry. A beautiful chaotic collage of sounds that reflect the black man's thoughts on the day-to-day. It doesn't take long to reach the heart of NEGRO, Pink Siifu's new album. It's an aggressive collection of hardcore punk and free jazz, with bold lyrics that encourage shooting back at trigger-happy law enforcement. This album profoundly communicated the anger of an African-American community beset by police violence a month before the murder of George Floyd lit the streets on fire. In April 2021, he revisited the project with NEGRO DELUXE, which doubled the length of the original. Pink Siifu tells Bomb Magazine Inchafter we were done mastering and mixing, Zeroh was like, InchYo, NEGRO is like fire, and NEGRO DELUXE is like smoke... So I would characterize NEGRO DELUXE as, like, after you're angry, after you've punched a wall, after you beat somebody up, whatever, how do I channel that into something else? How do I just let it go? I feel like NEGRO DELUXE is that, for real, in a nutshell.
