Poglietti / Cordarte - Sonatebattaglie & Lamento - K - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Cornettist William Dongois performs nine sonatas by Giovanni Battista Fontana. Born in Brescia, Fontana was active in Venice, Rome and Padua, where he died in 1630 during a plague epidemic. He was an outstanding violinist, and his only surviving opus with 18 instrumental sonatas is an important testimonial for the emergence of autonomous instrumental music. In addition, three instrumental canzonas for large ensembles are included, as well as an instrumental version of the great motet Exaudi Domine by Giovanni Gabrieli.

Les Presses Universitaires de France and Frémeaux & Associés offer this biography of Diogenes, analyzed and explained by Jean-Manuel Roubineau, lecturer in ancient history and specialist in social history and the history of ancient sport. An atypical philosopher, Diogenes did not forbid any extravagance, did not submit to any of the social conventions in force in the Greece of his time, the 4th century BC. But if Diogenes has remained, until today, a familiar figure in Western culture, it is first and foremost because of his role in the birth of a major philosophical current the cynicism. Passed successively through all conditions - citizen, foreigner, slave, freed - Diogenes displays his detachment with regard to social and political affiliations, until he declares himself a citizen of the world and, at the same time, inventing cosmopolitanism. Jean-Manuel Roubineau retraces Diogenes' journey in a clear and lively way and allows us to grasp the complexity of the philosopher.

Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, a flamboyant character from Italy's violin scene, was born in Milan and moved to Rome at age 25, where he became known as the Inchhunchback of the QueenInch Christina of Sweden. His stature predestined him as a singer for roles of gnomes and dwarves in Rome's opera scene. Corelli played for a few years in the orchestra directed by Lonati, it's concertmaster. One can only marvel at the fact that the virtuoso didn't publish his collection of 12 sonatas (with 6 InchSonate da cameraInch and 6 InchSonate da chiesaInch) before the year 1701, possibly motivated by the success of Corelli's own violin sonatas (1701). At his point in time however, Lonati's compositions were already a few years old and had been copied a number of times. Had he published his works at the time of their creation, his success would have been distinctly greater. Lonati's virtuosity comes close to that of H.I.F. Biber. The power of expression in his music is surprising, although he cannot disavow the sunny origins of his Italian soul. After the volume dedicated to the InchSonate da camera,Inch we herewith present the InchSonate da chiesaInch.
