About this product

The Bristol Type 156 Beaufighter was a multi role aircraft flown by the RAF during World War II, coming into service in 1940 as a night fighter during the Battle of Britain. The Beaufighter saw extensive use with the RAF, The Fleet Air Arm and Coastal Command as well as The Royal Canadian Air Force, The South African Air Force, The Royal New Zealand Air Force, The Free Polish Air Force (Polskie Sily Powietrzne) and the Royal Australian Air Force (who also made widespread use of the aircraft in the anti-shipping role). The Beaufighter could boastfully carry rockets, bombs or torpedoes and with four 20mm cannons in the nose and machine guns in the wings, the aircraft packed a heavy punch. The aircraft was used in what was described as the most Inchimpudent raid of the warInch when it flew on June 12th 1942 at very low altitude to drop a Tricolore (French flag) on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and then strafed the Gestapo Headquarters at the Place de la Concorde. This scene depicts two Beaufighters of 144 Sqn heading back over the North Sea to Dallachy, North Scotland, after an anti-shipping raid on Norway in November 1943; 144 Squadron was based at RAF Wick during this period. In May 1944 the squadron was relocated from it's anti-shipping duties in the North Sea to RAF Davidstow Moor in Cornwall to prepare for D-Day (operation Overlord), where it would be tasked with protecting the invasion fleet from German E-Boats. PopMarket - Fw 190 Over Normandy: Bellica Military Range (1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle) - GAMES (MISC) - Multicolor

Josef 'Pips' Priller and his wingman (Sgt. Wodarczyk) were the only Luftwaffe aircraft to strafe the Normandy beaches on D-Day, navigating the tightest fighter screen in history. On 6 June 1944 (D-Day), Priller, accompanied by his wingman, made a single strafing pass attack on Sword Beach in their Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8s. This performance was first brought to the world's attention by the 1959 book (shortly followed by the film) 'The Longest Day'. Contrary to popular belief, Priller and his wingman were not the only Luftwaffe forces to attack the beachhead that day. Both Luftwaffe Hauptmann (Captain) Helmut Eberspächer, leading a ground-attack four-plane element of Fw 190s of Schnellkampfgeschwader 10 (which downed a quartet of RAF Avro Lancasters at 05 01 over the invasion area), and the Luftwaffe bomber wing Kampfgeschwader 54 made several attacks on the British beachheads on D-Day. Priller flew 1, 307 combat missions to claim 101 victories. All his victories were recorded over the Western Front and consisted of 11 USAAF heavy bombers, 68 Spitfires (the highest Luftwaffe ace's tally for this type), 11 Hurricanes, five medium bombers and five USAAF fighters. In this scene he flies the Focke-Wolf Fw 190, aptly named the InchButcher BirdInch by allied pilots, this aircraft was one of the best aircraft of World War II. PopMarket - Boat Attack: Bellica Military Ranges (1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle) - GAMES (MISC) - Multicolor

S-Boats are strafed by an RAF Coastal Command Beaufighter Mk X in the English Channel. The S-Boat (or E-Boat/Enemy Boat as named by the allies) was a formidable weapon in the German Kreigsmarine arsenal. Regarded as an elite branch of the German navy, these boats and their crews were fast, heavily armed and deadly. During World War II, E-Boats took a heavy toll on allied shipping; 101 merchant ships, 12 destroyers, 11 minesweepers, eight landing ships, six MTBs, one torpedo boat, one minelayer and one submarine. They also damaged two cruisers, five destroyers, three landing ships, one repair ship, one naval tug and numerous merchant vessels. Sea mines laid by E-Boats also claimed 37 merchant ships, a destroyer, two minesweepers and four landing ships. In recognition of their service, members of E-Boat crews were awarded 23 Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and 112 of the German Cross in Gold.
