About this product
Poulenc wrote two ballets, the suites from which feature on this recording. Fusing together musical styles from various periods and genres enabled him to construct the largely plot-free narrative of 'Les Biches,' a sequence of captivating dances that explore many themes which were considered taboo at the time. In 'Les Animaux modeles,' Poulenc transforms the animals of La Fontain's fables into human characters in a patchwork score brimming with color, wit, and self-borrowings. The 'Sinfonietta' is playful and light-hearted. From it's foundation in 1948 as the Radio Eireann Symphony Orchestra, the RTE National Symphony Orchestra has been at the forefront of symphonic music in Ireland. Today, the RTE National Symphony Orchestra plays a central role in classical music in Ireland through year-long programmes of live performances, schools and educational projects, broadcasts, recordings and new commissions.

The term 'brunette' refers not only to a young woman with brown hair, but also to a musical form that was highly fashionable from the late seventeenth century to the early eighteenth. The genre evolved from the air de cour, extremely popular in France since the beginning of the seventeenth century. The compositional process, however, remained very similar to write a short, tender song, dealing with themes of love or nature, which could be sung alone or accompanied by a harmonic instrument. The late seventeenth century also saw the appearance of an instrument that soon became a favorite of composers and amateur musicians the German flute, now called the traverso or Baroque flute. In this new program, tenor Reinoud van Mechelen, flautist Anna Besson and A nocte temporis present an anthology of airs and brunettes ranging from the most touching song to the heartiest drinking song (air à boire).
