Rachel Love - Lyra - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

English singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Love began her musical career in the late 70s with the legendary Dolly Mixture, a group of three teenage friends who subverted pretty much every rock cliche imaginable with their bright, energetic DIY pop music and created the template for countless non-dude bands since. No one used the words postpunk or indiepop back then, but Dolly Mixture are in the DNA of both. After Dolly Mixture wrapped-up in 1984 Rachel continued writing and playing music, but it wasn't until 2021 that she released the first record under her own name. InchPicture In MindInch is packed with rich, dreamy pop that sits comfortably between 60s sunshine pop and and the mod-ish sounds of groups like Saint Etienne and Broadcast.Tunes like InchPrimrose Hill,Inch InchWandleburyInch and InchBorrowed TimeInch drift by like daydreams, foregrounding Rachel's lovely voice and melodies. Co-produced with her late husband, Steve Lovell (Blur, Julian Cope), InchPicture In MindInch is minimal but never overly spare; rather it basks in a warm simplicity that feels like a tonic in these hectic times.Initially released as a limited edition on CD only, we're very happy to bring InchPicture In MindInch out on vinyl LP - a beautiful orange vinyl edition at that - now for the first time, alongside a repackaged CD. Album Tracks 1. Primrose Hill 2. Down the Line 3. No More 4. Dreaming 5. The Long Way Round 6. Far Away 7. Borrowed Time 8. Wandlebury 9. Easter Song 10. Look for the Gold

The Way Forth, a new folk opera from Rachel Grimes, encompasses rich layers of voices and orchestrations in an experiential, non-linear investigation highlighting perspectives of Kentucky women from 1775 to today. Inspired by a treasure-trove of family documents, photos, and letters spanning several generations, Grimes began in 2016 to research some of the more vexing questions that came to the surface about these people, places, and events. Fueled by intuition, travel to visit family, photographing, and filming present day rural Kentucky life, the research led to many more questions What is missing? What is not being said here? What did she really think and feel? Primary historical accounts routinely glossed over people without titles or voting rights, and dehumanized most others by referring to them as objects of desire, savages, or slaves. Further examination formed a framework for trying to reconcile her state's history and how it relates to the westward expansion and settlement of the United States and ultimately how an era of domination, denial, and pain is reflected in the complex culture of today. The songs that make up The Way Forth weave back in time through a postcard, a personal account of a long life on a farm, traces of folk tunes, names, places, and rivers, all woven into an emotional fabric of yearning, nostalgia, grief, and the rich intimacies of everyday life. Initially solo voices are heard above vivid orchestrations, expanding with the choral voices of the community through fragments of traditional church music and popular tunes. The scope widens to include a modern male narrator's reflections on a place battered by greed, civil war, bigotry, and the exploitation of natural resources. Through music, voice, and film, The Way Forth honors the emotional legacy of the silenced, the holistic, the beauty in quotidian life, and explores the eternal grace

Born in Akron, Ohio, Rachel Sweet began her singing career at the age of three. She began recording country music in 1974, but with little success beyond one minor hit. Switching to rock and roll, she signed to Stiff Records and released her first album, Fool Around, in 1978. At Stiff Records, nothing was sacred; often the tag's slogans and unorthodox promotion were as memorable as the truly inspired music they released. With teenage Rachel Sweet, it would seem that their perverse humor had finally gone too far. One listen to her albums, however, and all questionable images and in-jokes fall into the background; Inchthe little girl with the big voiceInch made some terrific music, holding her own on a roster that had no shortage of talent. Alive In America is a Renaissance Records-produced Live Concert Album featuring performances by Rachel Sweet from 1979 and 1980. Album Tracks 1. Truckstop Queen 2. Foul Play 3. Jealous 4.
