About this product
Oraison is a musical meditation on memory, history and time, articulated in a jazz idiom. Raphaël Imbert bases his reflection on his own experience as a resident of a village in Haute Provence, Oraison, which is the only village in France to have given it's streets the names of soldiers who died in combat during the Great War, or in an act of resistance during the Second World War. The name 'Oraison' is thought to have Provençal origins and to mean 'the place where the wind blows'. Where the spirit blows! Oraison, a series of original compositions which take the form of a textless secular oratorio, is an opportunity for Raphaël Imbert to propose a spiritual and narrative journey with a precise plan, a series of evocative portraits, a different way of remembering, a means of living and reliving through a memory enriched by creation. A deep and communicative emotion that can flower to the full in the 'classical' quartet of sax-piano-double bass-drums, in the company of some of the most innovative improvisers on the French jazz scene. In this recording, Luca Pianca explores the enchanting world of 17th-century French music. He introduces the listener in the unique and refined musical style of the Grand Siècle, where the lute and theorbo reigned supreme. Ennemond Gautier le Vieux, a notable lutenist and composer, left an indelible mark on the French lute tradition of the time. His work laid the groundwork for future musicians, including luminaries like Robert de Visee, who would go on to create their own musical masterpieces. Experience the timeless elegance of these compositions that transport us to the glorious musical landscape of 17th-century France. Album Tracks 1. Prélude 2. Allemande 3. Courante InchLe CanonInch 4. The fusion between the string quartet, the perfect expression of the European 'classical' tradition, and the bandoneon, the musical embodiment of Argentina, is presented here in two quite different works. The Five Tango Sensations were originally written for Lutz Mommartz's experimental film Tango durch Deutschland. In 1989, Piazzolla resurrected five of the original seven pieces in response to a commission from the Kronos Quartet, renaming them Five Tango Sensations. This work occupies a special place in the ocean of Astor Piazzolla's music for two reasons it is his only suite for bandoneon and string quartet, and it departs from the standard Piazzollian framework in both form and language. The suite Les Hommes de Piaf was originally a series of arrangements for string quartet and bandoneon based on tunes from the repertoire of Edith Piaf. But the composer's pen trumped the arranger's, imposing a texture in which the songs no longer play the leading role. Neither descriptive nor abstract, the suite Les Hommes de Piaf is merely a fantasised expression of states in which love can be by turns paradoxical, destructive, idealised, impossible or sensory, through a kaleidoscopic 'Piaf filter'. Album Tracks 1. Les Hommes de Piaf 2. Four for Tango 3. Five Tango Sensations 4. Escualo 5. Ayamos Al Diablo (Bonus Track)
