Red Norvo - Red Norvo Quintet - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

18 tracks from 'Mr. And Mrs. Swing' with the big band 1938.

This classic album originally released on the Famous Door tag was vibraphonist Red Norvo's first date as a leader in five years (since an Affinity session with the Newport All-Stars). Although largely neglected in the 1960s, Norvo was still in prime form as he shows on such numbers as InchThe One I Love,Inch InchTea for Two,Inch and InchRunnin' Wild.Inch He is heard either with a quartet, also including pianist Hank Jones, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Jo Jones, or a quintet with pianist Jimmie Rowles, bassist Gene Cherico, drummer Donald Bailey, and guitarist Lloyd Ellis. It's high quality swing from one of the great vibraphonists.

This reissue of a 1957 Rave Records features Red Norvo's Quintet with Bob Drasnin on flute and alto; Jimmy Wyble on guitar, Buddy Clark on bass and Bill Douglass on drums. This quintet has a hard-swinging low-key style that epitomizes the InchcoolInch jazz of Hollywood in the 1950's. Great solos by Red on vibes, Bob Drasnin on alto and flute and Jimmy Wyble remind US of how alive this music could be in the hands of these consummate professionals.
