Reger / Schoener,Christoph - Organ Works (Introduction Passacaglia & Fugee E) - SUPER-AUDIO CD [Super Audio CD (SACD)]

Acclaimed vocalist-lyricist-arranger Fay Victor & her Herbie Nichols SUNG Quintet celebrate & thoroughly reconsider the rich legacy of jazz composer Herbie Nichols with Life Is Funny That Way, and bring it singing boldly into this century. Following on Billie Holiday, who famously wrote InchLady Sings The BluesInch to Nichols' InchSerenade,Inch Victor developed this deep love project over the course of decade, after years of exploring the late composer's work. This landmark album marks the first time that a full program of lyrics have been written & recorded for Nichols' compositions. The innovative arrangements -also by Victor- are brought to vibrant life by a dedicated & deeply gifted quintet of veteran performers; Michaël Attias (alto & baritone sax), Anthony Coleman (piano), Ratzo Harris (bass), and Tom Rainey (drums).   The source material is from Nichols' Blue Note sessions of 1955-56, plus three compositions not recorded in his lifetime. With erudite & extensive liners by Kevin Whitehead.

This is another set of sensual female jazz vocals from Jacintha, who is backed this time around by a full string section, arranged by Bill Cunliffe. This wonderfully recorded CD contains great solos from guitarist Anthony Wilson & flugelhorn player Dmitri Matheny. Also features bassist Darek Oles & drummer Joe LaBarbera. He loved to improvise on the organ, which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart considered Inchthe king of instrumentsInch. It is all the more astonishing that only a few Inch genuineInch organ compositions found their way into his catalogue of works. For his latest production, Christoph Schoener combines obvious and surprising arrangements with Mozart's original works. The new Wegscheider organ in St. Jakobi in Stralsund proves to be the ideal instrument in his respectful reference to the masters of the 18th century. The Stralsund organ has had a checkered history the magnificent case has always fascinated art-loving visitors from all over the world, but for a long time the organ work behind it did not live up to it's visual pretensions. The first instrument soon fell into disrepair due to inferior workmanship, and later alterations and extensions tended to worsen the condition and threatened to destroy the ornate carving through overloading. It was not until Kristian Wegscheider completed a new building in 2020 that the ornate exterior was matched by an adequate interior. Schoener knows how to make the most of this Be it for Mozart's original works, which were mostly composed for a self-playing instrument, or be it for the transcriptions, from the InchMagic FluteInch and the InchFigaroInch to piano works such as the popular Variations on InchAh, vous dirai-je, MamanInch. Even Franz Liszt, who is extremely knowledgeable about the organ, is among the arrangers (InchAve verum corpusInch) - if that's not incentive enough!
