About this product

The Austrian composer Hans Gal expressed himself in practically all important areas of so-called InchclassicalInch music, and not least had great success with several of his stage works before he had to emigrate from Germany to England due to the political situation. He was obviously a very gifted creator of musical idylls, as this new recording from Finland shows. The Divertimento for Chamber Orchestra from the 1920s and the Serenade for Strings have a gracious charm that is only surpassed by the seductive, harmonically enchanting Concertino for Violin and Orchestra. The piece reveals nothing of the composer's personal circumstances or the growing threat looming over Europe - all that was good, true and beautiful was an inextinguishable source of life to Hans Gal.

Gal - Chamber Works for Cello - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Bringing to light another of Hans Gal's gorgeously melodic and finely crafted scores, AVIE presents the world premiere recording of the Austrian émigré's Concertino for Cello and String Orchestra with Matthew Sharp supported by Gal aficionado Kenneth Woods conducting the English Symphony Orchestra. Gal's compositional output was vast, varied and consistent, from his early success in 1920s Germany, through internment during World War II, to his days in Edinburgh where he settled, became a respected academic and lived out his long life. His vivacious Cello Concertino was written in 1965, when he was 75 years old. The two spirited solo cello works were among his last, written at the age of 92. Inchhats off to conductor Kenneth Woods for making a case for Gal's elegantly built orchestral pieces... Here's hoping this is the beginning of a substantial Gal revival.Inch (National Public Radio's All Things Considered)

Various Artists - Die Weisheit Des Alters - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The InchArs moriendiInch the Inchart of dyingInch - is a term that appears again and again in the Middle Ages. Especially Oswald von Wolkenstein, but also other minnesingers, deal with the dwindling strength and the physical decay at the end of life. And most of all, the poets are always concerned with their personal fear of the afterlife. Heinz Schwamm and Rainer Herpichböhm, who have formed the core of the ensemble für frühe musik augsburg for more than 40 years, are also close to this topic. They combine the Inchage complaintsInch of the minnesingers with youthful fresh dances and thus this InchMemento moriInch becomes a joyful and pleasurable confession.
