About this product

French music owes a great deal to dance, from the survival of the Ballet de Cour in the comedies-ballets of Lully, to his tragedies lyriques, these compositions imposed the French choreographic model in Europe. Here is the sequel to Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, which in 1670 marked the peak of the Comédie-Ballet, when Louis XIV stopped dancing. With his Characters of the Dance in 1720, Rebel offers a work without sung text, the first maturity of the choreographic genre, before Rameau gives it a prominent place in Pygmalion, a sumptuous ballet act. When Gluck adapts his Orphée for Paris, he amplifies the danced parts with exceptional inspiration. Finally, Mozart integrates a vast French-style ballet into his Idoménée the Chaconne is irresistible... Galvanizing the Royal Opera Orchestra, Reinhard Goebel's sharp baton stretches the arc of a century of French-style dance !

House of All - House Of All - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

These days everyone loves The Fall, but rarely has a band's rise to cult status been quite as lengthy, unpredictable and unprecedented as that of those lovable Mancunian misfits who went through more line-up comings and goings than anyone sane would bother to count. Martin Bramah, The Fall's singer until Mark E Smith's lesser guitar skills caused them to swap places, was, per Daryl Easlea, Inchpossibly the last true equal to Smith in the groupInch and likewise the longest survivor of the original line-up. Yet while The Fall was later famous for their legendary productivity, Bramah often went great spans of time between releases, releasing fewer albums in thirty-five years (under any guise) than he has in the last seven with Blue Orchids - who already have a fantastic new album in the can. What caused House of All to come together is something of a mystery. Bramah has joined forces with four other mighty Fall alumni Steve Hanley, The Fall's longest-serving bassist, as well as his brother Paul Hanley, who drummed on what may be the best run of Fall records, from InchGrotesqueInch to InchBend SinisterInch. The three have also played together as Factory Star, for a brief period. Joining them are two surprise members - drummer Simon Wolstencroft, who joined the Fall around the time Paul left, and more surprisingly, guitarist Pete Greenway, The Fall's longserving and final guitarist who has, to our knowledge, never played with the other four before.1. The New York Virtuoso Singers Rosenbaum - Voices of Our Ancestors - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Paul Conway writes InchOne of Musgrave's most powerfully expressive and lavishly intricate vocal works, Rorate Coeli (1973) is scored for unaccompanied SATB choir. There are also five soloists (SSATB), who sing both as a quintet and as individuals. This dramatic and virtuosic piece shows an inventive approach to text-setting in it's use of quasi-improvised musical effects. The Voices of our Ancestors (2014) is scored for brass quintet (horn, two trumpets, trombone and tuba), organ and SATB choir. Substantial and ambitious, The Voices of our Ancestors draws upon ancient texts from a number of linguistic sources, including Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Egyptian and Chinese, all translated into English. Commissioned by Wells Cathedral, Missa Brevis, for SATB choir and organ (2017) was first performed by Wells Cathedral Choir, on the Feast of John the Baptist, Sunday 24 June 2018, in the presence of the composer. This compact setting of the Ordinary of the Mass has a reassuring, positive character with several of the sections concluding brightly on major chords.Inch
