About this product
The music of Jordan Reyes, founder/owner of American Dreams Records, hones wide-ranging explorations to a fine sonic point - featuring bass, synthesizers, trombone, lap steel, choral vocal layers - moving with the instruments' notes in concert. Robert Stokowy, a German sound artist whose work exercises great restraint, treats sound as a raw material to shape into aural sculptures. Stokowy released Strife of Permanence, which filters his meticulous process through the aesthetics of black metal, on American Dreams last year; he mainly presents his work via site-specific, longform installations. On the surface these approaches couldn't seem more different. A focused collaboration between the pair would seem a challenge, if not impossible. Northern Ashroud Is My Country synthesizes their approaches into a unique whole, combining Reyes' propulsive investigations with Stokowy's patient architecture, and creating an immersive space for listeners to explore.1) I2) II3) III4) IV5) V6) VI Album Tracks 1. I envisioned the record as a journey through human expression over the course of one day, says Chicago composer and ONO member Jordan Reyes. When planning the album, Reyes wanted to consider the trajectory of American music, drawing a throughline from the oral traditions enmeshed in blues, country, folk to contemporary underground music, splicing together acoustic instrumentation with an experimental, electronic sensibility. The album begins with human-constructed wind on opening song InchThe Pre-Dawn Light.Inch. From there, Reyes adds acoustic guitar, electric guitar, lap-steel guitar, trombone, keyboards, and an electronic drum to the compositional mix.InchI wanted to push myself compositionally,Inch he says. InchMy first album Close was all eurorack synthesizer, a lot of which was automated by control voltage, but Sand Like Stardust has no modular synthesizers, seeking to channel the warmth, immediacy, and vulnerability of hand-played instruments and voice.Inch1. Living as a queer, androgynous person, I have always seen the world beyond the binary. That's Kyle Kidd (all pronouns) talking about their debut solo album, Soothsayer. InchThose who came before me,Inch they say, Inchwere deeply connected through spirituality, with the gift to see the future wielded through the powers of ritual.Inch Kidd titled the album Soothsayer on the basis of this ancestral background. But the title doesn't just reference a term, it clarifies what the album is an expansive rendering of life beyond the binary, balancing self-possession and self-preservation, the challenges of vulnerability and the redemptive possibilities of love - all in a half-hour.
