Elgar / Sibelius / Wass / Gimse / Lauriala / Inui - Easy Listening Piano Classics - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

'Romantic' is a term with several meanings. With a capital 'R', it usually refers to a period roughly from the 1820s until around 1900 during which the work of artists, musicians, writers, including philosophical, political and social thinkers, of the late eighteenth and early to mid nineteenth centuries became highly influential. However, music which could still be regarded as 'Romantic' continued to be composed until and even beyond the Second World War, a situation further complicated by the resurgence of 'Neo-romanticism' since the mid 1970s. With a lower case 'r', the situation is only slightly less ambiguous 'romantic' can mean 'loving', 'idealistic', 'passionate', 'impractical', 'chivalrous', 'unrealistic', 'adventurous', 'amorous', 'deluded', and more besides! As early as 1810, E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) dubbed Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven the three 'Romantic Composers', while Ludwig Spohr (1784-1859) described parts of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony as examples of 'good Romantic style'. By the early 1900s the entire 19th Century was regarded by many as 'The Romantic Era', although this all-encompassing retrospective view smoothes over many differences between the aesthetic and political trends that affected Europe in the wake of the French Revolution (1789-1799), those that arose mid-century around 1848 (sometimes referred to as the 'Spring of Nations' or the 'Year of Revolution') and later developments that would culminate in the cataclysm of the Great War (1914-18). The great French poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), himself a harbinger of Modernism, wrote in 1846 that 'Romanticism is precisely situated neither in choice of subject nor exact truth, but in the way of feeling.' And, though 'the way of feeling' certainly changes-perhaps it's easier to hear the differences between, say, the music of Franz Schubert (1797-1828) and Richard Strauss (1864-1949) than

Ries / Rummel - Complete Works for Cello 1 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Ferdinand Ries's life and work are inextricably intertwined with those of his friend and teacher Beethoven, and both Cello Sonatas, Op. 20 and 21 were dedicated to cellist Bernhard Romberg, who performed regularly with Beethoven. Ries exploits Romberg's extraordinary sound quality in the lower register of the cello in music that resonates with references to colleagues such as Haydn and Hummel. Ries's final Cello Sonata, Op. 125, completes a triptych that richly deserves it's place in the cello repertoire. This joins an ongoing program of releases of music by neglected composer Ferdinand Ries. This has included an edition of his complete piano sonatas and sonatinas played by Susan Kagan, to whom Inchclassical music lovers owe a debt of gratitude for rescuing these attractive keyboard creations from the undeserved obscurity that they've been languishing in for the past two centuries or so.Inch (Halesowen News) Acclaimed cellist Martin Rummel has recorded widely for labels including Paladino Music and Capriccio. His recordings for Naxos include works for cello and piano by Joseph Merk and Reinhold Gliere. Recordings by pianist Stefan Stroissnig include Beethoven's Second and Fourth Piano Concertos with the RSO Wien conducted by Heinrich Schiff on the Gramola Records tag, and his recording of the Four Impromptus Op. 90 by Franz Schubert and the Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt was awarded the 'Pasticcio Prize' by Austrian Radio. Album Tracks 1. I. Allegro Con Brio 2. II. Adagio 3. III. Polonaise. Allegretto Moderato 4. I. Allegro 5. II. Andantino Quasi Allegretto 6. III. Menuetto. Allegretto - Trio 7. IV. Rondo Allegro Ma Non Troppo 8. I. Grave - Allegro 9. II. Larghetto Con Moto 10. III. Rondo Allegretto

Schumann / Halsdorf / Shiraki - Works for Horn & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Camillo Schumann, a pupil of Carl Reinecke in Leipzig, enjoyed an admired career as an organist, pianist and prolific composer. He pursued a traditional path that reflected his own training, interests and beliefs- barely acknowledging the tumultuous contemporary musical world of Schoenberg and Stravinsky. Instead, his works for horn and piano enshrine the finest qualities of German Romantic music. Sur la montagne by Laurent Menager, a leading Luxembourgian composer, is a richly evocative depiction of a mountain landscape. Album Tracks 1.
