About this product
Rod Rogers And the Travis Jay Jones Orchestra is actually an alias for multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Rodd Keith, who is the best known figure in the obscure musical sub-genre known as song poem music - a practice by which aspiring lyricists submit their wares, and for a fee the record company would put their lyrics to music. Keith wrote, sang and played a variety of instruments on many of these recordings which have since become highly collectible and quite rare. Presented here is the often described musical genius' quirky, Las Vegas themed album, recorded in the early to mid 1960's using the Chamberlin tape playback sampling keyboard, a forerunner of the modern synthesizer. All selections newly remastered.

Recorded by American archeologist Ralph S. Solecki in 1953 during excavation in the mountains of Kurdistan, this collection of Kurdish folk songs and dances features the two barreled reed flute, a drum, and various local singers. The authenticity and simple honesty in these songs shines through on this recording. Solecki notes that much like the ballads of our Appalachian mountaineers... The songs deal with universal things, such as love troubles and war. Liner notes include translations of song lyrics as well as a brief explanation of Kurdish culture and history.
