About this product

This recording from Owain Arwel Hughes and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is the first in a cycle of all seven of Sibelius's symphonies. Symphony No.1, from 1899, is coupled with No.3, from 1907. Although bound by classical conventions, and the influence of Tchaikovsky, No.1 displays a remarkable and striking independence of thought. No.3 shows the composer making the transition from the large-scale symphonic structures of the first two symphonies to the more compact, tightly argued symphonies that followed. Album Tracks 1. Sibelius Symphony No.1 in E minor Op.39 - Andante Ma Non Troppo 2. Sibelius Symphony No.1 in E minor Op.39 - II Andante 3. Sibelius Symphony No.1 in E minor Op.39 - III Scherzo 4. Sibelius Symphony No.1 in E minor Op.39 - IV Finale (Quasi Una Fantasia) 5. Sibelius Symphony No.3 in C Major Op.52 - I Allegro Moderato 6. Sibelius Symphony No.3 in C Major Op.52 - II Andantino Con Moto, Quasi Allegretto 7. Sibelius Symphony No.3 in C Major Op.52 - III Moderato

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra / Owain Arwel Hughes - Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 4 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Sibelius's Symphony No.2 of 1902 represents a big step forward in his development as a symphonist. It's thematic fragments are driven by harmonic tensions through which the composer takes the listener on an eventful journey. Symphony No.4 of 1907 inhabits a bleak, dark, emotionally fraught landscape. Sibelius had been diagnosed with a cancerous throat tumour and feared for his life. After a successful operation to remove it, he lived in fear of it's return. He gave up both whisky and cigars and suffered awful withdrawal symptoms. Battling with his demons and self-doubt, the result was an outpouring of honestly expressed emotions. Symphony No.4 is one of the greatest symphonies ever composed, and is expertly rendered by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Owain Arwel Hughes. Album Tracks 1. Symphony No. 2 in D major Op. 43~I. Allegretto 4. Symphony No. 2 in D major Op. 43~IV. Finale Allegro moderato 5. Symphony No. 4 in A minor Op. 63~I. Tempo molto moderato, quasi adagio
