About this product

Composer, piano virtuoso, conductor, teacher - Camille Saint-Saëns was all of these things, but also a keen archaeologist, astronomer, botanist, historian, illustrator, poet, playwright... A seasoned traveller, he was the most famous French musician in his own lifetime, acclaimed in North and South America, the Middle East and across Europe. It is ironic, then, that his extensive and varied output isn't better known today - except for a few works of which the most famous, Carnival of the Animals, is one Saint-Saëns himself had little affection for. Now often regarded as old-fashioned or even reactionary, we tend to forget that Saint-Saëns during his lifetime was sometimes heckled for the boldness of his works. Furthermore, he defended the music of the revolutionaries Wagner and Liszt, earned the admiration of figures as Berlioz, Debussy and Ravel and - in 1908 - composed one of the first original scores for a film! Jean-Jacques Kantorow and the Tapiola Sinfonietta have championed the music of Saint-Saëns on a series of acclaimed albums, and are now joined by the young Alexandre Kantorow - son of the conductor - for a survey of his works for piano and orchestra. In 1858, Saint-Saëns became the first major French composer to write a piano concerto, but on this first of two the Kantorows present the three last concertos. Composed over a period of almost 30 years (1868 - 1896), these are highly individual works Piano Concerto No. 3 is a bold attempt to reconcile Classical form with a Lisztian pianistic brio, No. 4 employs an unusual formal scheme in which themes are reused in a cyclic manner and, finally, the 'Egyptian' (No. 5), named after the second movement, which in the composer's own words describes 'a sort of Eastern journey that goes all the way to the Far East'.

Anna Vinnitskaya - 4 Ballades / 4 Impromptus - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The pianist Anna Vinnitskaya has built up an impressive discography since her victory at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2007 Bach, Brahms, Ravel, and of course the Russian composers with whom she has been familiar since her childhood in Novorossiysk, then her studies with Evgeni Koroliov. She has now made her first Chopin recording, coupling the four Ballades, a cross between the miniature and the sonata, with the four Impromptus he composed at different periods of his life, between 1835 and 1842. Anna Vinnitskaya was born in the Russian city of Novorossijsk. She was a student of Sergei Ossipienko in Rostov and Evgenyi Koroliov at the Hamburg conservatoire. Since 2009 she has been a professor there herself - that is, when she is not touring the stages of the wide musical world.

Slim Gaillard - Searching For You: The Lost Singles Of Mcvouty - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The Lost Singles of McVouty 1958-1974 - Slim Gaillard - Sometimes I go knocking on the doors of my heroes. Usually it's a family member or friend who helps open that door. This was the case in January of 2014 when my longtime friend, producer/journalist, Kevin Goins connected me with Jan Gaye the daughter of Slim Gaillard. Slim was a one-of-a-kind. He played guitar, piano (sometimes with palms up), sang and even had his own funny language called 'Vout'. His music has brought me a lot of joy since my early 20's. Slim's music is happy and represents the good things in this life. As I write in my liner notes, InchSlim's music should be prescribed by doctors to individuals who are depressed.Inch With the support of Slim's family I'm happy to announce the first newly-heard music of Slim Gaillard in decades, a pill we can all swallow! - This new collection is culled from lost 45 records that were collected from online auctions by my co-producer, Tom Samuels. Very little is known about these tracks, recorded for such obscure labels as SGM Music, Sky Strip & Xavier Records. My guess is these were self-produced singles Slim was cutting, sending out to A&R agents looking for a 'deal' or to radio stations for a hit. Thanks to Michael Graves at Osiris Mastering Studios in Atlanta we were able to restore a great deal of the sound, gingerly, cleaning up the audio as best as possible without removing the high-ends. - This deluxe 4-panel, digi-package contains a 32-page booklet with rare photographs plus essays by yours truly, author and historian Ricky Riccardi, Gaillard archivist and co-producer Tom Samuels, saxophonist/composer and friend of Slim, John Altman, and lastly Slim's son and daughter, Mark Gaillard and Jan Gaye. Many thanks to Len Fico and the estate of Slim Gaillard for making this project possible. And thanks to all of you for all your support.
