About this product

Chicago's mighty Salem Travelers were a transient ever-changing group who were known for soulful harmonies and glass-shattering lead singing in the 60s and 70s. These two tracks from 1928 were taken from their brief time on the Chess subsidiary Checker. The A-side, InchTell It Like It IsInch, a heady song grasping for the truth, is filled with wah wah guitar chops and excellent lead breaks that spice up the conga-adorned upbeat. InchGive Me Liberty Or Give Me DeathInch, is slightly slower with a Motown-styled backbeat behind a fist-pumping anthem that reels in it's churchy roots with some great vocal interplay. Both are typical of their repertoire of songs that provided social commentary on the troubles of the world.

The Devonns - Tell Me / Tell Me (Instrumental) - 7-INCH SINGLE [7 inch Vinyl Disc]

The Devonns dust off the golden age of Chicago Soul. Straight from the streets of Chicago, Illinois, The Devonns (pronounced InchDe vaughnsInch) are the brand new soul outfit and the latest addition of the Record Kicks' family, whose self-titled debut album that drops April 06, is an assortment of influences taking us back to the heyday of soul. InchTell MeInch is the 1st single from their anticipated full length and sees the lights on limited edition 45 on March 06 and digital. Drawing influences from bands such as The Dramatics, The Isley Brothers and Leroy Hutson, yet bringing in their own unique modern twist, influenced by artists such as Jamie Lidell and Raphael Saadiq; singer Mat Ajjarapu explains how unintentionally, the rich heritage of Chicago's history with soul music influenced him. InchThe city was at the epicentre of a lot of good music back in the 50's all the way to the 80's, a lot of the labels specialising in soul were based in the Chicago and we even had our own sound known as InchChicago soulInch. Through several years of crate digging it surprised me how many songs I loved were recorded in this city, for example one of my favourites is this great little song by The Natural Four, produced by Leroy Hutson 'Can This Be Real', and released via Curtom Records.Inch The band started in 2016 after multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Mathew Ajjarapu dropped out of med school and found himself unemployed and drifting. Listening to music constantly at the time, he found inspired to put a band together and create his own music. Pairing up with some of the best musicians Chicago has to offer, he founded The Devonns the rhythm duty is entrusted to Khalyle Hagood (bass), Ari Lindo (guitar) and Khori Wilson (drums). Originally he wanted to focus on 50s style doo-wop, similar to The Flamingos; rich in reverb and vocal harmonies, but in the first initial practise

Harlem Gospel Travelers - Nothing But His Love - 7-INCH SINGLE [7 inch Vinyl Disc]

As the world around us succumbs to disgusting hate-fueled violence, folks are looking for answers... looking for a ray of hope. And while it may not save the world, we all certainly help this new tune from The Harlem Gospel Travelers brings a note of positivity in your life. InchNothing But His LoveInch was apart of our Brighter Days Ahead campaign, the goal being to provide folks with new music while looking forward to better days in the future. We certainly hope this 45 and the stirring B-side InchGod's Gonna Move His HandInch can do that!... The Harlem Gospel Travelers are not from Harlem. They came to Harlem, however, from far-flung corners of the five boroughs of New York City, and it was in Harlem, that legendary center of African-American culture, that they found their voices. As members of the music education program Gospel For Teens, these young men spent many hours on the subway or the bus to ultimately end up at an unassuming brownstone on W. 126th Street. They walked through the red door at the parlor level, the one with the cross on it, and inside they found a world of music. Gospel music. As their teacher, my job was less to impart information, and more to show these talented young men what they already knew. They already knew how to sing, that much was obvious, but it was here that they learned what their voices could really do and how to use them. We listened to the music of the masters The Soul Stirrers, The Swan Silvertones, The Violinaires and The Swanee Quintet, and these young men, really boys at the time, soaked it all in. They quickly moved from imitation to creation, writing their own songs and building original arrangements of traditional material from the ground up. They honed and tightened their harmonies. They learned when to shout and when to whisper. What you have before you is the distillation of all their hard work - the first full-len
