Prepare yourself for one of the greatest challenges and one of the best platform experiences of your gaming life. A well delivered story wrapped in some of the best 2D gameplay you'll experience. Now this is a challenge, the game expects you to play. But so long as you're not a so called games journalist, you should be ok. Get this game. You won't be disappointed.

If you can imagine a 2D Dark Souls game, this is it. Great atmosphere, good difficulty curve. Fun artstyle too. Recommended if you like 2D platformers and Dark Souls.

As the title suggests, this game borrows the styles of progression, exploration and world building established by the Dark Souls series. While it also borrows the series' combat style, it manages to feel slightly more hack-and-slash. Bosses are challenging and epic, the art style is alluring and all of the elements together make one immensely satisfying game. Only drawbacks to this Switch version are that the game appears somewhat blurry in docked mode, and dark areas of the game are difficult to see in handheld mode. Otherwise, I still highly recommend this game and this version of it.

There are few games where the game demands skill from the player while keeping things interesting and fun without leading to frustration. This game excels in doing that thanks to the art style and gameplay. You feel progression while playing and looking forward to what lies ahead. The dark style of the game is very well done and you will enjoy playing it.

Clearly inspired by Dark Souls, it is a fun but definitely a difficult game to play. Has plenty of classes to choose from for a variety of gameplay choices, but gives no direction, which when exploring can make things frustrating at times when trying to find your way around only to run into a monster that you clearly aren't meant to fight yet. Overall a fun game when you get the hang of it, but can get difficult at times.

If you've played Dark Souls you will recognize a lot of features in this game. From armor to rings this game is nearly identical except it's a side scroller. You can roll and block and do nearly all the same things too. You even level up in much the same way. Great game that will take a while to master!

Salt and Sanctuary is an moody, rich, and engaging 2D game that feels very similar to a Dark Souls game. If you like games similar to Dark Souls or are a big fan of 2D side scrolling games, this one is definitely worth checking out. It's easily one of the best games from 2018 in my opinion.

Salt and Sanctuary is a fun 2D side scroller that can be a challenge to play. The game has a Dark Souls type style, but on 2D platformer. I recommend anyone to pick this title up if your into the classic Castlevania/Dark Souls type of games.

Reviewers have said this game is like a side-scrolling Dark Souls. I have to agree (not having played the Souls games, but heard reviews on podcasts) I agree that you much be very careful how you approach enemies, and if you die, it is because YOU did something wrong and weren't careful enough. This is a medieval age game where you pick your class and work your way to the next sanctuary where you can set-up and have a new point from where you go exploring (and where you are resurrected when you die, which you will, a lot). The progress is a bit slow, but enough that it is very satisfying when you unlock a new place, or get enough material to upgrade your weapons. You will get hours of play out of it if you don't mind the slog. A lot of game for a value price

This game is great. Great graphics, great story, great soundtrack, great gameplay and GREAT difficulty. You will be challenged but not unfairly. If you enjoy challenging games and the metroidvania genre, give this one a try.

This game does an incredible job at immersing you into the story with its beautiful artistic world and extremely addicting gameplay. I just received this in the mail today and popped it in, 4 hours passed so fast! And like everyone has said the best way to describe Salt and Sanctuary is a “2D Souls” game. That is the truth, but it still has subtleties that make it a game on its own and with those differences it manages to not come off like some Souls knockoff. You can clearly see and feel how much love went into this game. If you like challenging 2D side scrollers, FromSoftware Souls games, or just want to try something different. Buy this!

I love this game so much. It's one of the few games out there that tries to emulate the style of Dark Souls and succeeds. The atmosphere is dark, gloomy, and oppressive. The level design is brilliant and a joy to explore, it's tight and clever with lots of shortcuts back to previous locations to unlock along your way. The rpg elements are really well done, you can level up, find new equipment and upgrade them. The game offers a really unique massive skill grid that's akin to games like path of exile which allows for a ton of freedom in building your character. Can't recommend this game enough if you're fond of games like Dark Souls.

Everything about this game hits the right notes. The gruesome, dark graphics pull you into a world soaked in lore that's slowly unfurled before you. Exploration and experimentation are key. This game can be quite unforgiving, but never feels unfair (except for Spindlebeasts- they're jerks). I adore everything by the developers, and this may be their best work yet. I had purchased this game digitally, but when the physical version was announced, I had to snap it up for the map and other goodies. If you enjoy games like Hollow Knight or Dark Souls, or you like to conquer enemies that sear themselves into your memories, this is a must-buy.

It's like official reviews highlight. It is like Dark Souls but in 2D. It makes for an excellent Metroidvania. Exploration is thrilling. Your never know what's behind next corner, it could be nice loot or a life-or-death fight. Controls response is tight so if you die it's on you. It's a very hard unforgiving game. You'll die a lot until you get it right. I did and I've beaten a couple of bosses in a one go. So be persistent.

I was expecting a challenge, this game is maybe a bit too hard depending on what weapons you use. Unfortunately it is here, with the balance, where the game falters a bit. I suppose though it isn't much different from having different difficulty settings in other games. You want to play on easy? Choose heavy weapons that let you one-shot your enemies. Want more of a challenge? choose weaker weapons like knives and daggers, whose speed sadly doesn't make up for poor damage output. Still worth checking out though.

As a big fan of Demon's/Dark Souls games, I always wanted to give this a try. It's basically a 2D version of Dark souls. Although the art style may be a bit of a turn off, I'm a big fan of it as it reminds me of older games. The combat is fluid, and there are many different styles to try in this game. I highly recommend this one!
