The author of around 800 cantatas, Alessandro Scarlatti was the most prolific composer of this particular chamber genre during the Baroque period. In this engaging we are introduced to two examples, both 'with instruments' and written for solo contralto, the voice type to which the Sicilian dedicated a mere 10 per cent of his cantata output. Perchè tacete, regolati concenti is the first, a work that corresponds to the typically 17th-century themes of unrequited or unhappy love, with both the character and the music expressing the feeling of grief that underpins the text. The prose is actually quite weak in comparison to the quality of the music, and it may be that Scarlatti wrote it himself he was, after all, described in the wording of his admission to the Arcadia as a ‘professor or poetry’. It is in any case an early composition; the second cantata, Filen, mio caro bene, we know was written later, on account of its style as well as Arcadian subject matter (which by then was in vogue the work is set in a natural context). Complementing these works are a couple of concertos and sonatas by the composer, each set in a minor key. An all-Italian cast are at hand to perform the program, with alto Gabriella Martellacci – who has appeared as a guest performer with such prestigious orchestras as the Royal Concertgebouw and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia – taking the lead in the cantatas. Tenor Jonatan Alvarado and vihuelist Ariel Abramovich browse through the folios of the Huehuetenango song manuscript 15 volumes of polyphony and Gregorian chants from Northern Guatemala. From the more than 350 works recorded between 1582 and 1635, the dream duo chose mass movements, motets, chansons and villancicos that offer a glimpse of the intercontinental musical traffic on the eve of the Baroque.? Jonatan Alvarado is a singer and player of (very) old songs, be them contained by Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts scattered all over the world, or found in the oral traditions of Europe and the Americas. He took his first musical steps in the guitar class at the conservatory and in the municipal choirs of Mercedes, Buenos Aires. He then studied orchestral conducting, choral conducting and composition, and later graduated with honours in singing and lute. He is musical director and co-founder of the ensemble Seconda Pratica and a member of Da Tempera Velha and Sollazzo Ensemble. Dazzled by a fantasy by composer Luys de Narvaez, Ariel Abramovich decided - being still a teenager - to dedicate exclusively to the lute and vihuela repertoire of the 16th century, a decision he has maintained to this day without any regrets. In 1996 he moved to Switzerland to study with his teacher and mentor, Hopkinson Smith, at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. He has released several albums with a variety of musicians and is member of the ensemble Da Tempera Velha, dedicated to Medieval and early Renaissance Castillian repertoire.

Ex Tempore is the debut album from the Nova Scotia-based Charke-Cormier duo. Derek Charke and Eugene Cormier have curated a charming program that includes an original composition by Charke (Ex Tempore), and arrangements of Handel and Peter Maxwell Davies by Cormier paired with works by Debussy, Handel and Brazilian-Canadian composer Celso Machado. Derek Charke (flutes) and Eugene Cormier (guitar) formed the Charke-Cormier Duo several years ago culminating in a debut recital at the KC Irving Centre in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. This sonorous union of flute and guitar continues to charm audiences across the Maritimes. Their repertoire includes many of the most important works for this pairing of instruments, and creates a sonic journey for audiences from the street corners of Argentina to the halls of Europe, as well as introducing fresh new works created today. Both performers are highly accomplished musicians who are on the teaching faculty at Acadia University's School of Music.
