About this product
Celebrated soloists Roderick Wiliams and Christopher Glynn perform a new English translation of Franz Schubert's Winterreise. Composed in 1827 whilst in the grip of the illness that would ultimately kill him, Schubert's setting of Wilhelm Muller's poetry takes on an added tragic interpretation as it follows the narrative of a spurned lover travelling through a cold and barren landscape. Christopher Glynn writes on this new recording InchWe hope this Winter Journey can offer English-speaking listeners a way to experience the story's sense alongside the music's sound, with something of the same directness that Schubert surely intended when he sat down at the piano in 1827 and sang these songs for the first time to his friends.Inch This is the first in a series of three English language programmes of Schubert's song cycles. Future releases include The Shepherd on the Rock (Der Hirt auf dem Felsen) and The Fair Maid of the Mill (Die schöne Müllerin).

Schubert's Winterreise was present for both of us very early in our lives. Daniel keeps telling me how he sat at the piano with his grandfather and played Der LeiermannInch. We were fascinated by this work, which seemed to know so much about what we felt and whose story was somehow our story. The negation of the physical in song singing and the wish of the guards of the genre to use only the voice for expression were always suspicious to me and I wanted to find out what expressive possibilities Schubert's songs reveal once you dare to give up the that has been in use since the 1950s. It was clear to us that we would not only find approval, but we were willing to take this risk. [...] And in the end we arrived back at the beginning - with the music of Schubert and the poems of Wilhelm Müller. For despite all our search for a new , we always wanted to be faithful to the text. And that's why we rehearsed for many hours during this time, listened to our concert recordings, argued and struggled for every note, every bar and every word. We discovered how wild, expressive, desperate but also hopeful, melancholic and quiet Schubert's winter journey is. And over the years an interpretation matured which we have now recorded on this album with sound engineer Franz Schaden near Vienna. It is not our last word on the winter journey, only a snapshot.Inch (Johannes Held)

Pavol Breslik writes of his new InchFrom the very beginning, I had enormous respect for Die Winterreise, because it demands everything from the narrator. Whenever I open a page where I have set the notes aside and look at it again, I have new questions. And sometimes I don't find an answer to everything. This 'process' never stops.Inch With his 3rd Lieder Album for Orfeo, Pavol Breslik sets foot on the 'Olympus' of German Lied Gesang with Schubert's Winterreise. His internationally acclaimed recording of Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin (C737151) foreshadows that he has something to tell us also about this genius and mystical masterwork. InchWe artists are always strongly influenced by the work we are just doing. We put our entire soul into it and do our very utmost to present it to the listener. Only whoever has really felt suffering, can sing about suffering. Here, it is a question of authenticity.Inch

These amazing Germans are back with their second album for Ripple Music and it is a stunner. Doesn't get much better than this!
