About this product

Making their debut on Resonus with a ravishing programme of 'Songs of Love and Death' by Robert Schumann is the critically acclaimed duo of baritone Simon Wallfisch and pianist Edward Rushton. Alongside what is perhaps Schumann's best-known Wanderlieder song series, Dichterliebe, Op. 48, from 1840, this distinguished pairing have explored two further series from Schumann's notoriously productive 'Liederjahr' of 1840 - his Op. 35 setting of twelve poems by Justinus Kerner, and the Fünf Lieder, Op. 40, containing four songs by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. Simon Wallfisch is one of Britain's most sought after Baritones, at home on the opera and concert stage. In 2017, Simon made his Wigmore Hall debut live on BBC Radio 3. He has a growing catalogue of song recordings with Nimbus, Lyrita, Delphian and Resonus record labels. Born in London into a musical family, Simon Wallfisch studied cello with Leonid Gorokhov and voice with Russell Smythe at the Royal College of Music between 2000 and 2006. Estonian National Symphony Orchestra - Mihhail Gerts - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Eduard Tubin stands among the most significant symphonic voices of the twentieth century, a composer whose music draws deeply on Nordic landscape, folklore and myth while speaking with a powerful modern voice. This recording with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Mihhail Gerts explores the formative years of Tubin's creative life. At it's centre is the Symphony No. 2, InchLegendaryInch (1937), a work that established Tubin's distinctive voice, moving from a mysterious opening through sombre reflection to a fiercely driven finale. Alongside it appears the Suite on Estonian Motifs, his first major orchestral composition, presented here in it's first recording. Completing the program are two early Piano Preludes from 1926, performed by Mihhail Gerts, offering a glimpse of Tubin at the very beginning of his compositional journey. Together these works trace the emergence of a composer who would go on to become one of Estonia's most important musical figures. Album Tracks 1. Tubin Suite on Estonian Motifs (Etw 13) I. Prelude 2. Tubin Suite on Estonian Motifs (Etw 13) II. Ostinato 3. Tubin Suite on Estonian Motifs (Etw 13) III. Intermezzo 4. Tubin Suite on Estonian Motifs (Etw 13) IV. Finale 5. Schumann / Pregardien / Piau - Dichterliebe - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Julian Prégardien decided to record the Dichterliebe cycle after he came across the new Bärenreiter edition; he went on to explore the work in concerts with his constant accompanist, Eric Le Sage, inserting other works by Robert and also by Clara Schumann, whose bicentenary is celebrated in 2019. When Clara played the Dichterliebe in the 1860s, she used to slip extracts from Kreisleriana between the songs. Prégardien asked Eric Le Sage to record the same extracts on a Blüthner piano of 1856, the year of Robert's death, and also include Romances composed by both Robert and Clara at a time when their future marriage was still uncertain. The sublime ballade Löwenbraut also forms part of the programme - a reminder of the young Robert's anguish on Clara's departure. At Julien's suggestion, Sandrine Piau was invited to sing three duets a simple Canon composed by Clara, and two duets by Robert, Wenn ich ein Vöglein wär, and the sublime In der Nacht. Four further songs complete the album Sängers Trost, a short piece in belcanto style; Kurzes Erwachen, composed by Robert at the age of just eighteen; Aus den hebräischen Gesängen, a very melancholy song; an extract from the cycle Myrthen (Robert's wedding present to Clara); and Mein Wagen rollet langsam, a song that was included in the composer's first version of Dichterliebe. Album Tracks 1. In der Nacht, Op. 74/4 (from Spanisches Liederspiel) 2. 3 Romances, Op. 11~No. 2 Andante - Allegro Passionato - Andante 3. Löwenbraut, Op. 31/1 4.
