Scott McMicken & the Ever-Expanding - SHABANG - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

For the first time since his viral holiday album 'A Joyful Sound' released in 2020, Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics) is back with two new original Christmas songs. 'I Can't Wait (For Christmas Time)' is a heavy yet laid back cut with a straight ahead pop arrangement. It's that rust belt soul sound with the kind of harmonies that fuel Southern California cruisers; deep and emotive with just the right amount of instrumentation to push Finnigan's tender voice forward. The tune also features tag mate Kendra Morris and her band on backing vocals. Akin to previous KF releases or gems by The Escorts or The Four Mints, this record is meant for you and yours, wrapped in pretty paper under the tree until Christmas morning. Then save some room for cookies and the b-side... 'Snowy Night In Ohio' feels like a slow moving midnight train making it's way from Cincinnati to Memphis. Inspired by Finnigan's first winter in Ohio, his love for gospel records, and horn arrangements by Isaac Hayes. This is a true stand out instrumental that oozes ice cold soul. It has a brief vocal message from Finnigan that feels testimonial and heartfelt. Featuring Colemine's own Terry Cole and Jimmy James, plus Billy Aukstik and Morgan Price. Kelly says to be sure to treat yourself after a taxing year with a record the whole family can enjoy this holiday season. Merry Christmas!

Scott McMicken has always thrived on switching things up. As a founding member of Philadelphia rock mainstays Dr. Dog, McMicken and his bandmates consistently explored new sounds and new ways of writing songs across 10 gleefully eclectic albums before their 2021 hiatus. While McMicken has quietly released solo projects via cassette and vinyl on his own tag Press On Records, for his latest effort, he's done something he's only done once before started a band. With Shabang, out March 31, 2023, via ANTI-, comes the debut album from Scott McMicken and the Ever-Expanding, and he's made some of his freest and most adventurous music yet a wonderfully collaborative collection of songs that feel lived in and true.By being present and living with these musicians (quite literally McMicken and collaborator Michael Nau stayed in tents outside the studio) united under one common goal, Shabang is full of life and endlessly candid. InchI knew nothing good will come of this unless I am totally free and away from any pressure and pretense, Inch says McMicken. InchSuch an incredible spectrum of emotion passed through me while making this album. There was this lightness and un-self seriousness. I feel like music and life cruises at that spot everybody was so wholeheartedly invested and open.Inch
