About this product

Sebastian Bohren's world-premiere recording of InchIn Evening LightInch, the second violin concerto by Peteris Vasks, comes 25 years after the celebrated Latvian composer's first, InchDistant LightInch, one of the most successful, oft-performed and recorded concertos by a living composer. InchIn Evening LightInch seems certain to follow in it's forebear's footsteps, destined to become another modern classic. InchIn Evening LightInch - a three-movement, 38-minute work - is beautiful and contemplative, evoking a twilit world immersed in muted colours and permeated with deep shadows and dramatic contrasts. The album ends as it begins, with another atmospheric Vasks work. InchLonely AngelInch is an homage to his late mother who lived through practically the whole of the 20th century. The composer explains, InchThis piece is the vision of an angel flying alone above humankind, filled with grief at how cruel and aggressive we are to each other. Like a guardian angel he touches the earth with his wings and in that way offers us comfort and healing.Inch Sandwiched in between is the contrasting, classical-era Rondo in B minor by Franz Schubert, arranged for violin and strings. Preceding Vasks' works by nearly two centuries, Schubert similarly revels in exploring ambiance and spaciousness.

Linden String Quartet - Tobachi: Chicksaw Nation Young Composers Recording - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Tobachi is a collection of string quartets written by students from the Chickasaw Nation. These pieces, classical in instrumentation, are written by young students, but deliver an emotional impact far beyond their years. A unique perspective on life in 2013 makes for a compelling listen. The Linden Quartet performs these quartets with grace and eloquence as well as spirit and drive, in a manner that directly reflects the wishes of the composers. Each composer was present at the recording session, and the interaction between the Linden Quartet and the composer ensured that each piece was captured and performed exactly as the composer wished.

Sebastian Bohren - Rauchenecker: Symphony No. 1 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Although almost completely forgotten today, Georg Wilhelm Rauchenecker was an exceptionally versatile musician of European stature as founder and conductor of the first professional orchestra of the city of Winterthur (1875), composer, ardent Wagnerian, city organist, music dealer and pedagogue, he left weighty and far-reaching traces in Germany, Switzerland and France. The two orchestral works presented on this album were written for InchhisInch Winterthur City Orchestra (as the Musikkollegium Winterthur was called until 2000), while the Oriental Fantasy is an early work by the 21-year-old. Rauchenecker's symphonic debut seems in some ways to have been his artistic calling card Few of his other works were performed as often, and the piece remained in the repertoire until at least 1932. Despite Rauchenecker's close contact with the works of the New German school and his personal acquaintance with Richard Wagner, this work shows the composer to be a preserver of the symphonic tradition. In a certain sense, the work speaks of a commitment to Inchabsolute music,Inch for programmatic allusions as well as explicitly coloristic instrumental effects are completely dispensed with. His technically extremely demanding Oriental Fantasy combines the virtuosic demands of a solo concerto with a rhapsodically free form, and was one of Rauchenecker's own showpieces as a violinist.
