About this product
A look at the past of the galoubet-tambourin but also at it's future a musical anthology from the Middle Ages to today and tomorrow, through the baroque, classical and traditional repertoires, led by Michel Montanaro and André Gabriel. During the Middle Age and the Renaissance, the practice of whistle-and-drum playing developed throughout Europe, at all levels of society. The inhabitants of the New World, in their turn, were introduced to this practice, made popular by Spanish seamen, and adapted it to their own needs. Then, in the Baroque Age, those who, to a certain extent, were credited with the novel views held in this Age of Enlightenment, took advantage of such an InchexoticInch fashion and imitated it in order to draw closer to the lower classes. Later on, the Romantic Movement and the awakening nationalistic schools of thought were to regard this type of musical custom as a symbol of InchethnicismInch, and to use it later subconsciously as a pretext for their subsequent folklorisation. More recently, regionalism, with it's inevitable need to pick up identity tags, has completed the picture. For the last twenty years or so, the established way of teaching these instruments has prioritized written, prescriptive, learned tradition - a tradition legitimized in part by the plethoric 18th century repertoire of InchRural MusicInch. A number of excellent instrumentalists were trained in this way. The present album offers a re-interpreted sum of all these historical trends. It's aim is to provide an authentic anthology, that will at the same time preserve this particular heritage, along with some indispensable guidelines, and promote a personal or modern view of this century-old musical practice.

![Jewish Chamber Orchestra Munich - Weinberg: Concertino for Cello & String Orchestra Op. 42 & 43 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/6c5abaeb-5292-40b1-bebb-71d0d5c7c1fa.jpg;maxHeight=422;maxWidth=264?format=webp)
Polish composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg was born in Warsaw in 1913. His father worked in the Yiddish Theatre as a violinist. The young composer would also work in this theatre as a pianist, and the music of the Eastern European Jews would form an indelible influence on his music. As would the tragic events that overtook his family in the Holocaust. His parents and his sister were murdered in the Trawniki concentration camp by the Nazis. Weinberg had fled Poland for Minsk, and then to Tashkent, finally settling in Moscow where he lived until his death in 1996. Even there he was never free from persecution. Shadowed by the KGB, accused by the Soviet Composers Union for 'formalistic tendencies', he lived a life under constant fear of arrest, and psychological pressure. He was finally arrested in early 1953, and it was only the tyrant Stalin's death in March that year that saved him from a longer term. He was released after several week incarceration. This album provides the perfect introduction to this important 20th century composer who worked with some of the big names of the USSR, David Oistrakh, Rudolf Barshai (the dedicatee of the 7th Symphony) to name just two. The Concertino for cello and strings is shot through with an emotional charge clearly associated with the harrowing experience of the murder in 1948 of his actor/director father-in-law by the KGB, an event that heralded the beginning of his own persecution by the authorities.
