Shad - The Old Prince - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

2021 . Over the course of five records to date, the JUNO Award-winning Toronto rapper has used an array of old-school tools to tackle modern problems, addressing the indignities and absurdities of our world through a shapeshifting mélange of boom-bap breaks, dusty soul samples, jazzy improvisation, and 10-dollar words rolled into thousand-dollar rhymes. But after weaving his myriad musical and philosophical interests into a socio-political song cycle on 2018's Polaris short-listed A Short Story About A War, Shad began building his sixth record, TAO, from a much simpler concept an image of a circle. Though, in true Shad fashion, he saw something much more profound within it's basic round boundaries.

A lot of this record is about memory and long stretches of time - not just making, but remaking, constantly tinkering. That's Daniel Wyche - a Chicago-based guitarist, composer, improviser, and professor - whose new LP Earthwork has been a long time in the making, depending on the jump-off point. The LP synthesizes guitar music and instrumental soundscapes, resulting in a nuanced, cohesive collection inspired by family, loss, and legacy that falls in between Japanese environmental music, free jazz, and modern classical. Wyche is as community-oriented as they come, being part of organizations such as Chicago's Elastic Arts and co-founding COVID relief initiatives like Experimental Sound Studio's The Quarantine Concerts, but that ethos carries into his music, too. Opening track InchThis Was HomeInch is a seventeen-minute testament to the meaning of place and the beauty of collaboration. RIYL Midori Takada, Godspeed You!
