Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) pretends to be a Nazi spy to aid scientist Dr. Franz Tobel (William Post, Jr.) and his invention (a bombsight), while in Switzerland. Holmes and Franz fly back to London, but Franz slips away for a secret meeting with his fiancée, handing her a coded message to be presented to Holmes should anything happen to him. Holmes receives a call telling him that Tobel has disappeared. Holmes goes to Charlotte's apartment, where he receives Tobel's envelope. Rather than the coded message, the message inside is from Holme's nemesis, master criminal Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill). Moriarty has abducted Tobel to retrieve the secrets to his invention, which Tobel had given in four sections to trusted associates. Holmes returns to Charlotte's apartment to search for the four missing parts to the encoded message. Holmes is able to deduce three of the message's parts, but cannot figure out the fourth. Meanwhile, Moriarty is torturing Tobel in order to uncover the four parts to the message. Who deciphers the encoded message first - Holmes or Moriarty? Lots of action and thrills to come, making this one of the best Holme's classics ever made! (65 minutes - 1943 - Black & White - 4 3).

The Secret Weapon - 65 minutes - 1943. Sherlock Holmes must outsmart the Germans and get scientist Dr. Tobel out of Switzerland and back to England with his secret bombsight equipment. The wartime plot of this adventure finds Holmes and Watson once again doing battle with their villainous enemy, the evil Moriarity, who is working for the Nazis this time. Terror By Night - 57 minutes -1946. Sherlock Holmes has been hired to safeguard the valuable Star of Rhodesia diamond belonging to Lady Margaret Carstairs during her train journey from London to Scotland. Holmes and Dr. Watson not only have to foil an attempted robbery but also catch a murderer. Terror By Night, with it's intricate plot, is arguably one of the most atmospheric and exciting films in the series. (122 minutes - 1943/1946 - Black & White - 4 3)

The Woman in Green is a 1945 American film, the eleventh of the fourteen Sherlock Holmes films. The film stars Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. When several women are murdered and their forefingers severed, Holmes and Watson are called in to investigate. Widower Sir George Fenwick (Paul Cavanagh) has a romantic night at the apartment of Lydia Marlowe (Hillary Brooke), and is hypnotized into believing that he is responsible for the crimes. He is certain he is guilty when he awakes from a stupor only to find a forefinger in his pocket. His daughter discovers Sir Fenwick burying the finger and goes to Holmes and Watson with this information. Sir Fenwick is then found murdered by someone to keep him from talking, and Holmes theorizes that Moriarty, (Henry Daniell), who was supposed to have been hanged in Montevideo, is alive and responsible for the crimes. Holmes now realizes that Moriarty's plan involves killing women and cutting off their forefingers, making rich, single men believe they have committed the crimes, using this fake information to blackmail them and counting on the victims being too terrified to expose the scheme. Holmes befriends Lydia, whom he had seen with Sir George at a restaurant and suspects she is in cahoots with Moriarty. Moriarty then hypnotizes Holmes and tells him to write a suicide note and to walk out of Lydia's apartment onto the ledge and jump to his death. Watson arrives just in time to grab the criminals, but Moriarty escapes from the hold of the policeman and jumps to the top of another building. This movie has to be watched to find out how this never ending rivalry between Holmes and Moriarty ends. This is truly Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, not to mention Professor Moriarty, at their quintessential best! (66 minutes - 1945 - Black & White - 4 3).
