Shostakovich - Film Music - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Shostakovich was still a young composer when he was hired to provide incidental music for The Bedbug, a surreal and farcical satire on Communist utopian dreams and bourgeois corruption and vulgarity. He produced a terrifically knockabout score that draws on local fireman's bands and American dance music. Illustrated by Shostakovich's powerful middle-period music, Love and Hate is a film about female fortitude set in a mining village during the 1919 Civil War. The innovative score, newly reconstructed by Mark Fitz-Gerald from rough piano sketches and the 1935 soundtrack, combines symphonic sections with popular songs. Album Tracks 1. The Bedbug, Op. 19 (1929) 2. Part One - the Year 1929 3. Part Two - Fifty Years Later The Year 1979 4. Love and Hate, Op. 38 (1935) 5. Love and Hate, Op. 38 (1935)

Shostakovich / Tabakov - Shostakovich 9 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

With his Symphony No. 2 in B Major, Op. 14 InchDedicated to OctoberInch Dmitri Shostakovich experiments in this genre. It is the shortest of his symphonies - of one movement and a closing chorus - and it sounds in a very avant-garde way in the context of Russian music of that time. It consists of two parts the first one, which is purely instrumental, is composed by using atonal technique. The means are subordinated to the idea - from darkness to light, from chaos to harmony. Expressed in the words of political reality - from the spontaneity of the complaining crowd to revolutionary awareness. Shostakovich even includes a factory siren in the music scores. The chorus finale is based on the pathetic propaganda text of the poet Alexander Bezymensky The composer began to write Symphony No. 12 in D Minor in memory of Lenin, entitled InchThe Year 1917Inch. We can feel in it the presence of the leader and strategist of the Great October Revolution. This opus is in continuation of the revolutionary theme in his previous Symphony No. 11 InchThe Year 1905Inch. But if the composer incorporated popular revolutionary songs into it's musical dramaturgy, here the thematic structure is unfolded through the transformation of small intonational motifs evoked by some of them. This is the composer's most traditional and heroic-theatrical symphony. These two works add to the series of symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich. Album Tracks 1. Symphony No. 2 in B Major Op. 14 InchDedicated to OctoberInch 2. Symphony No. 12 in D minor, Op. 112 InchThe Year 1917Inch
