About This Item

In 1968, visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull (The Andromeda Strain, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) contributed to the ground-breaking special photographic effects of Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey. Four years later, he stamped his own indelible mark on the science fiction genre with his mesmerizing directorial debut - Silent Running. In the not-so-distant future, Earth is barren of all flora and fauna, with what remains of the planet's former ecosystems preserved aboard a fleet of greenhouses orbiting in space. When the crews are ordered to destroy the remaining specimens, one botanist, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern, The 'Burbs), rebels and flees towards Saturn in a desperate bid to preserve his own little piece of Earth that was, accompanied only by the ship's three service robots. Featuring a captivating central performance by Dern, visual effects that rival anything in 2001 and a powerful ecological message, Silent Running is a haunting and prescient sci-fi classic that resonates even more strongly today than it did at the time of it's original .

Turning Red - 4K Blu-Ray [4K Ultra HD Blu-ray]
4.7(77)

In early-'oughts Toronto, life for 13-year-old Meilin Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang) was about her BFFs, boy bands, and most of all, hyper-achieving to keep the hover-'rents (Sandra Oh, Orion Lee) happy. That was until she got smacked by an old family curse-that turns her into an 8-foot red panda when stressed-and her comically calamitous coming to terms with it fuels this incisive and endearing Pixar effort. Also with the voices of Wai Ching Ho, James Hong, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. 100 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English.

U-571 - 4K Blu-Ray [Standard] [4K Ultra HD Blu-ray]

During World War II, a neophyte officer (Matthew McConaughey) heads up a secret U.S. Navy mission to retrieve a German encoding device from a disabled U-boat in the Atlantic. The operation succeeds, but the American sub is destroyed. Can the crew fix the damaged U-boat and make it home while staving off the enemy? Based on a true (albeit British) story, this gripping war drama also stars Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, Jon Bon Jovi. 117 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English; audio commentary. Two-disc set.
