About this product
From it's inception with landmark works like Edgard Varèse's Ionization (1929-31), Amadeo Roldán's Ritmicas (1930), or John Cage's First Construction (In Metal) (1939), the percussion ensemble has been associated with innovations in rhythm-with driving, pulsating, and complex explorations of the domain of time. The titles of these works suggest this aesthetic, calling conspicuous attention to their own modernity and hinting at a type of abstraction and scientific outlook towards the investigation of new materials. Alongside these rhythmic explorations, however, there has always been another aspect of percussion music an intense preoccupation with the nature of sound. From instruments fashioned out of everyday objects to those with long and distinguished histories, the sheer variety available to the percussionist is staggering, as is the range of different sounds each instrument can produce. The sounds of the percussion ensemble run the full spectrum from dense noises to clear chimes and bells, and navigating this variety presents both challenges and opportunities. The performances of the Lugano Percussion Ensemble, recorded on this disc, meet these challenges admirably with interpretations that are sensitive to the nuanced shaping of individual sounds, technically precise, and authoritative in bringing to life new works, many of which were composed specifically for this Ensemble. The pieces presented on this album represent a new generation of music for percussion ensemble, building on the innovations of Varèse and Cage, but also bringing the vast array of abstract material to new expressive forms-shaping sounds, both familiar and novel, into evocative images and associations, even narrative journeys through the world of sonic possibilities.

Guido Alberto Fano's vocal chamber works form an important part of his musical output and mark the three crucial phases of his artistic growth. His earliest songs date from the last years of the 19th century, during his period of training and the start of his musical career in Bologna, using texts by local poets such as Angelina de Leva, Luigi Arturo Bresciani and Giuseppe Lipparini. Then, during the first fifteen years of the 20th century, his most InchexperimentalInch years, Fano began to draw inspiration from some of the most distinguished names in Italian poetry, including Boccaccio, Carducci and Pascoli. Finally, his last creative period, after the 1930s, saw a return to the vocal genre with seven pieces on poems by D'Annunzio and one by Carducci, all written in 1945. Fano usually calls his vocal compositions InchcantiInch, a choice often shared by his colleagues of the so-called Inchgeneration of the eightiesInch. On the whole, Fano's music reveals a commitment to avoid stereotypes and surrendering to the vestiges of easy appeal, demonstrating the composer's sensitivity in responding to the ethical demands of modernity, with that determined solicitude which characterised the inner workings of the great composers of the early 20th century. - Vitale Fano

Elena Càsoli writes of her new on Stradivarius InchThis recording is the opportunity to collect, for the first time on a single album, most of the works for and with the guitar by Fausto Romitelli. I feel really gladsome about the possibility to think up and elaborate this with Stradivarius. For me, it represents the desire to crown my passionate work of years on his music. These are compositions full of strength and inspiration, with a sound that is vibrante e luminoso!, as Fausto writes on the fifth page of the Solare score. I have invited Teresa Hackel and Virginia Arancio to collaborate because of their bravura and their connection the works interpreted.Inch
