Simone Dinnerstein - Berlin Concert - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Simone Dinnerstein's new album A Character of Quiet features music by Philip Glass and Franz Schubert. Known internationally for her concerts and recordings, Dinnerstein was also the pianist for whom Philip Glass composed his Piano Concerto No.3 in 2017. The pandemic year of 2020 has struck hard at the heart of every human activity. During her time at home in Brooklyn, while reading Wordsworth's poetry, the resolve came over her to record Schubert's Piano Sonata D.960 along with selected Philip Glass Piano Etudes. Brooklyn, like the rest of New York, had fallen quiet enough to record and producer Adam Abeshouse crossed the city to record Dinnerstein in her own home. This recording carries us deeper into that sense of quiet.

The songs on Open and Close and Afrodisiac reflect the two sides of the Fela musical story. On Open and Close, we see Fela and his band toying with more improvisational grooves and movements. The songs span 10 to 15 minutes in length and hold a very smooth and melancholy approach, while still producing a danceable and pop feel. Afrodisiac, recorded at Abbey Road, consists of songs originally released on 45rpm singles in Nigeria and features Fela's first Nigerian hit InchJeun Ko KuInch.

Movements in time and sounds in space While visual art and music share inspirational sources, they often flourish in different realms. This circles around the idea of bringing (back) visual elements into the musical experience. The term InchsoundscapesInch refers to acoustic environments created by contingent phenomena. Sounds create scapes, evoking visual experiences. The compositions on this recording are capable of creating landscapes and seascapes in their own right. The three sonatas by Edward Elgar, Felix Mendelssohn, and Robin de Raaff originate environments that allow juxtapositions, pairings with three short pieces by Florence Price, Felix Mendelssohn, and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
