Siskiyou - Nervous - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The eponymous debut for the new group led by former Great Lake Swimmers member Colin Huebert in collaboration with Erik Arnesen (who still plays with the Swimmers) and musician / filmmaker Karolyn Keir. Banjo, piano, accordion and electric guitar play the lead roles here. The resulting collection of songs thrums with a scrupulous lo-fi backwoods energy and restraint that perfectly conjures the the rich, crisp yet often chilly landscape of the band's Pacific Northwest environs.

Leading Irish composer Gráinne Mulvey writes for many combinations of traditional instruments; this work for electronics was composed for an installation by sculptor Mark Garry at the Dublin Institute of Technology, using the sounds of one of his Aeolian harps (for which the piece is named). Christopher Fox is one of the most individual and creative composers of today with a bewildering variety of styles at his disposal - often as in his new piece 'untouch' using the very simplest of materials in expressive ways. This clever work is for a percussionist who instead of striking his instruments, passes his hand over them creating sine waves. The work was premiered at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2017. Each piece was realized by it's composer and receives on this it's world premiere recording.

Korn guitarist James InchMunkyInch Shaffer approaches his instrument with a revolutionary spirit every time he picks it up. There's no better example than the self-titled debut from Shaffer's Fear and the Nervous System. It's a deeply personal, pummeling, and often poetic sonic undertaking that sees Shaffer in the director's chair. For the album, he assembled an all-star cast including Faith No More bass god Billy Gould, Bad Religion basher Brooks Wackerman, guitarist Leopold Ross, keyboardist Zac Baird, and enigmatic singer Steve Krolikowski [Repeater].
