About this product
Niklas Sivelov (born in northern Sweden in 1968) is one of the leading representatives of the once-familiar tradition of pianist-composer that first achieved prominence with Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin and continued through Rachmaninov and Bartók. But Sivelov also has a sizable, and growing, body of orchestral music to his name. These three recent works reveal a style that balances delicacy of feeling and freewheeling energy, with something of Stravinsky's sense of rhythmic mischief, the vernal vigor of Tippett, just occasionally the harmonic density of Ligeti, and the unusual awareness of light and dark that characterizes the music of Sibelius and other Nordic composers.

This album features 20th-century compositions where the flute plays the leading role. Eldin Burton's Sonatina, one of his few works, has become a staple of the flute repertoire. The outer movements are marked by a playful, joyful character, contrasted with the serene, subdued middle movement. The Sonata by Srul Irving Glick, making it's Polish premiere on this album, incorporates elements of traditional Jewish music, enhanced by rich melodies and harmonies based on frequent modulations. This is a hallmark of the Canadian composer's style. The final piece is Three Watercolors by the French flutist and composer Philippe Gaubert. These miniature works, for flute, piano, and bassoon, combine influences from Impressionism, program music, and Iberian traditions. The performers on this album are award-winning soloists, teachers, and outstanding chamber musicians, which is reflected in their nuanced and light interpretations.

Overwintering is the 2022 album from Bobby Wratten (The Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars), recording as Lightning in a Twilight Hour. The follows on from the 2015 album Fragments Of A Former Moon. A collection of eleven songs overseen in collaboration with Ian Catt; a partnership dating back to the earliest days of the regularly referenced The Field Mice. Both Anne Mari Davies and Michael Hiscock from The Field Mice feature throughout this latest addition to Bobby's discography. Also present is Beth Arzy (Trembling Blue Stars, Jetstream Pony, The Luxembourg Signal), and Harvey Brown who adds guitar to the record's penultimate track. While some songs entered the studio fully formed, more than half of InchOverwinteringInch began life as purely musical landscapes before beginning a journey, eventually resulting in songs like the opener, InchLincoln GreenInch; a subtle introduction to this world of people and places, text and texture. The hypnotic psychedelia of InchDelphiniumInch follows, featuring the first of four lead vocals by Anne Mari Davies.
