About this product
Many of the works on this recording are declarations of love; for example the infinitely heartfelt SerenadeInch by Edward Elgar which was a gift from the composer to his wife on their third wedding anniversary, and had it's premiere in Antwerp in 1896. Likewise, the song InchJeg elsker digInch (I love you) was composed by Edvard Grieg for his beloved wife, the singer Nina Hagerup. I was, however, much more inspired by the all-embracing concept of love and with the contemplation and feelings that arise when listening to this music. The most sublime expression of this is probably InchDu bist die RuhInch (You are repose) by Franz Schubert - one of those works which, regardless of it's length, and with it's mood of almost religious contemplation, it's elevated gratitude and ensouled intimacy, is able to transfigure earthly existence into eternal bliss. It is among the most poignant works that a composer's pen has ever produced. Naturally the selected repertoire is, in a veiled form, also an exploration of - and immersion in - my own roots; a manifestation of my identity.Inch (Sofja Gülbadamova)

Of the works Ernst von Dohnányi wrote for the stage, only his ballet pantomime The Veil of Pierrette received any particular acclaim. His concert music, meanwhile, was much more warmly received. With this already sixth recording of his late romantical, sensual music, deeply rooted in the Austro-German classical tradition, Capriccio presents three of his concerts. Apart from two piano concertos and two violin concertos, Ernst von Dohnányi wrote three more, which are concertos in all but name Variations (for piano and orchestra), Concertino (for harp and chamber orchestra), and Konzertstück (for cello and orchestra); the names subtly hinting at their specific character.

To many ears, combining the words InchmusicInch and InchHungaryInch often awakens some pretty jaded stereotypes images of violin and cimbalom as typical instruments and the Gypsy violinist plying his trade by evoking wistfulness and passion among the audience. Today, the word InchGypsyInch is frowned upon, since among a resident population it conjures up the picture of those mistrusted travelers who enjoy the freedom of the open road the epitome of Gypsy romanticism. This is a touchy subject! The present album should therefore be judged for it's InchHungarian influencedInch piano music, the composers and their Hungarian affinities. One thing should be made clear at the outset all of the pieces played here by Sofja Gülbadamova - be they original works or arrangements - are in the two-four time that is so characteristic of popular InchHungarian musicInch and Inchtraditional Gypsy musicInch. Since Austria and Hungary were closely linked both politically and culturally for centuries, one might well describe Hungarian two-four time as a sort of Inchcounter spellInch to the three-four time of the Viennese waltz.
