Sony’s answer to Rode Wireless GO

I purchased the Rode system before I even had a chance to get my hands on the Sony version. Comparing the two, I really like the Sony system, but the Rode system has one nicer thing about it. It is that the gain adjustment on the Rode is located on the receiver, so if you need to make an adjustment, you can do so from your camera. The gain adjustment for the Sony is on the transmitter, so you can’t adjust the gain when you’re already rolling. One other benefit of the Sony is that the receiver can run on the hot shoe of Sony cameras. I really like how small and portable both systems are. I especially like how the Sony receiver and transmitter attach together so that losing one of them is harder, although if they are attached and you lose one, they’re both gone. Another big thing is price. The Sony gear was about $20 less. (You have to buy the lavalier mic separately for both systems, 280 before tax for Rode, 260 before tax with Sony) Another downside to the Sony is that the mic on the lavalier looks rather bulky, especially when you put on the pop filter. But it also has a rotatable clip and interestingly enough, it has a specific left and right channel. With the Rode lavalier, it is lower profile, but you do have to remove the pop filter in order to change the clip direction, and it can be fairly difficult to get that off. Although the lavalier needs to be bought separately, both systems’ transmitters are microphones already and come with addition pop filter if you don’t want to go the lavalier route. (It just won’t look as clean) I tested the connectivity for both and both seem to perform equally as well. The last area the Sony had the Rode beat out is more options on the receiver. (Minus the gain adjustment I mentioned earlier) You have the option to run the mic analog or digital, although the digital setting was not compatible on my a7iii, which it may just need a firmware update; I’m not sure. But, there is also the option to run the the transmitter as the mic, the receiver as the mic, or a mix of both. Both come with an optional short TRS cable and carrying cases, although I’m a fan of Sony’s more, because it’s a larger velvet sack that can fit everything. You’d have to get a separate one for the Rode system to fit everything. Last thing I will mention is that the gain on the Rode is naturally higher than the Sony. At the highest gain on the Rode, it almost sounded like I was about to shout. On the Sony system, the highest gain was more normal sounding and went down from there. Maybe it’s brand loyalty to Sony, but I really like the Sony more overall, however, the one thing I can’t get past is the gain adjustment being on the transmitter instead of the receiver.

Best Official Mic System for Sony Cameras

Features that I liked: Wireless connection and alternatives to mix audio from wireless mic and mic receiver. The mic produces a high quality audio, which is much more lowder than the camera mic. The mic itself has a clip to be able to be placed on your shirt and its quite handy. I will use it for my vlog videos and to improve the quality of the audio that I record with them.

    Good, but Wired Microphone unusable

    1. As a standalone product this works well. Setting the microphone to 10 db filters out the hum of loud background noise while preserving rich vocals. There is a 3.5mm TRS port on the wireless microphone that I intended to use with a wired Lavalier Microphone. (As advertised, the main picture shows this microphone plugged into a wired sony ECMLV1 which is Sold Seperately* for $30) However due to HEAVY radio frequency interference that causes a heavy “static” sound (the sound between radio stations) that is impossible. My recordings without the “Wired Sony ECMLV1 lav microphone” sound good for a small microphone but not as good as a $100 full sized microphone like the Yeti Blue.
