About this product
Soul Jazz Records' new collection, 'Electro Throwdown - Sci-Fi Inter-Planetary Electro Attack on Planet Earth 1982-89', is a journey into the outer reaches of electro, a galactic roller-coaster ride of turbo-charged sci-fi grooveology. // The album is comprised of mainly private-press and independent tag electro jams of the highest calibre (with some as rare as space ships landing on Mars) all created in the 1980s, at a time when a vocoder, a Roland TR-808 drum machine and a groove was all that was needed to get the party started. // With a few notable exceptions (Michael Jonzun's Jonzun Crew and The Packman) the album features mainly under-the-radar killer tracks from a host of one-off artists and back-room electronic pioneers - including Pretty Tony, Planet Detroit (James McCauley, aka Maggotron) and Rich Cason - who together helped shape the sound of electro across the USA from Miami to New York, Los Angeles and beyond during the 1980s. // This album comes with full sleeve notes (from Derek Walmsley of The Wire).

Soul Jazz Records new Sounds of the Universe Art + Sound 2012-15 is a new album featuring a line-up of some of the most forward-thinking and progressive artists and producers working with electronic music around the world today. This lovingly compiled collection features a stunning array of contemporary artists Chicago's Afro-futurist genius Hieroglyphic Being; Kassem Mosse (aka Gunnar Wendell/Siege of Troy), one of the most talked-about, respected artists in underground house and techno; out of Detroit's Moodymann stable comes Andres; also featured is Los Angeles-based Ras G, associated with the Brainfeeder tag established by fellow producer Flying Lotus; and many more! The first 8 tracks of this new collection were recorded exclusively for Soul Jazz Record's bespoke Sounds of the Universe tag. These were originally issued under their Art + Sound series between 2012 and 2015 as unique hand-etched and original commissioned art pieces (reproduced here) collectors' 12Inch singles - all pressed in micro-editions of 250 copies for each artist's that were only ever available exclusively from Soul Jazz Records' boutique Sounds of the Universe shop in Soho, London. The second part of this album features a fantastic set of all brand new exclusive tracks from the likes of Seven Davis Jr, Drexciya collaborator DJ Stingray, deep house virtuoso Mike Huckaby, Glaswegian noise-punk six-piece Golden Teacher, and lots more - all created and commissioned especially for this . These songs are not available anywhere else in the world and together they comprise an amazing selection of new progressive electronic music.
