This brand new 1/72 scale model of the SPAD S.A.4 Aircraft with Ski Gear from the French Air Force by Wings of the Great War comes in its original unopened packaging and features a highly detailed exterior with true-to-scale accuracy. Made of resin and measuring approximately 4 inches in length with a 5.25-inch wingspan, the model includes a display stand but does not have any functional openings. The SPAD S.A.4, developed by the Société Pour L'Aviation et ses Dérivés (SPAD) during World War I and first introduced in 1915, was an evolution of the earlier S.A.2 and designed to address early aerial combat and reconnaissance challenges. Its distinctive "pulpit" or nacelle design placed the observer in a forward-mounted pod ahead of the propeller, providing an unobstructed view for reconnaissance and machine-gun operation. While it saw limited service with the French Air Force, primarily in reconnaissance roles, the forward nacelle made the observer vulnerable and added drag that affected performance. Despite these limitations, the S.A.4 effectively demonstrated the adaptability and resilience of early aviators and contributed to the advancement of aerial reconnaissance and gunnery techniques.
