About this product

This album presents works for string orchestra by Lithuanian composer Algirdas Martinaitis (b. 1950) from his early breakthrough work Birds of Eden (1981) to a recent Valse triste (2020), giving a very broad vision of this composer. This program is performed by Lithuanian musicians of the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra conducted by Modestas Barkauskas and featuring violinist Ruta Lipinaityte and soprano Asta Krikšciunaite. For keen fans of music within the Baltic states, Algirdas Martinaitis is quite known for his works dancing between a serene beauty and sincerity before collapsing into an almost sarcastic nihilism, a style which he describes as Inchnew animalityInch. Within this style, much like Henryk Górecki's 'circus pieces', sarcasm, irony, and subversion of expectations become central to the music making. His early chamber works, including Birds of Eden, demonstrated his unique voice and saw him grouped with the neo-romantic movement within Lithuania. However, never wanting to be predictable or stuck in an idiom, he later shifted to a newer style. The Three M'art Comedy Seasons for solo violin and strings makes numerous musical references, not least to the famous Four Seasons of Vivaldi. Artizarra for string orchestra and harpsichord has an energized and bouncy nature which is comparable to J. S. Bach's concerti for multiple harpsichords or the latter movement of Górecki's concerto for the instrument. The album also two recent songs to lyrics by Oscar (Vladislas de Lubicz) Milosz (1877-1939), the famous Lithuanian French-language poet.

Kutavicius / Vilnius Municipal Choir Jauna Muzika - Seasons - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Bronius Kutavicius' oratorio The Seasons (2005-8) sets texts from a classic Lithuanian poem by 18th c. pastor-poet Kristijonas Donelaitis describing the peasant's life of toil. The Seasons mixes musical modernism and folk-inspired primitivism in an astonishingly powerful portrayal of the interaction of human activity and natural forces. Born 1932, Mr. Kutavicius is Lithuania's senior composer and is regarded as a national treasure. This 2012 live recording documents the first complete performance, given in the composer's presence, as part of the celebrations marking his 80th birthday.

Grazyna BACEWICZ was born on 5 February 1909 in Lódz. In 1919, she joined the Helena Kijenska-Dobkiewiczowa Music Conservatory in Lódz, where she took violin and piano lessons. After her family had moved to Warsaw, she continued her education at the local conservatory under the supervision of Kazimierz Sikorski (composition), Józef Jarzebski (violin), and Józef Turczynski (piano). In 1932 - thanks to a scholarship funded by Ignacy Jan Paderewski - she began a two-year study at the École Normale de Musique in Paris under Nadia Boulanger. In 1934, she returned to the French capital, this time to complete her education with respected violinist Carl Flesch. A year later, she was awarded the first honorable mention in the 1st International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition. Since then, for 18 years, she had also been active as a concert violinist. In 1953, Bacewicz abandoned stage activities, focusing almost exclusively on composing and teaching. In 1966, she took the composition class at the Higher State School of Music in Warsaw. The artist died on 17 January 1969. The present is a showcase of her music for string orchestra.
