About this product
Limited vinyl LP pressing. Stan Getz's incomparable career includes such landmarks as the bossa nova blockbuster Getz/Gilberto, and stellar collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Byrd, and Lionel Hampton. The saxophonist's superlative 1967 quartet recording Sweet Rain can be overlooked but Getz afficionados recognize it's quality. Standing in the shadow of the unprecedented mainstream success of Getz's bossa period that came before, the Creed Taylor produced Sweet Rain is as perfect a straight-ahead date as the leader ever made, with a remarkable young band including pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate providing crackling energy that clearly inspired Getz to new heights of expression, writes sfjazz. Limited vinyl LP pressing of this classic 1964 album. One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova's finest moment, Getz/Gilberto trumped jazz samba by bringing two of bossa nova's greatest innovators - guitarist/singer João Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim - to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. It's helped fuel the bossa nova craze in the United States and internationally, becoming the first Grammy Award-winning album from non-American artists. It brought together Stan Getz, who had already performed the genre on his LP Jazz Samba, João Gilberto (one of the creators of the style), and Jobim, a celebrated Brazilian composer (and also one of the main creators of the genre), who wrote most of the songs in the album. It became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and turned Astrud Gilberto, who sang on the tracks InchThe Girl from IpanemaInch and InchCorcovadoInch, into an internationally celebrated musician.

Recorded in February and March of 1963 and released later that year, Jazz Samba Encore reunites Stan Getz with Luiz Bonf? & Maria Toledo in a more intimate setting than the landmark Jazz Samba, shaped by Bonf?'s darker harmonic palette, Toledo's distinctive vocal and percussive presence, and Getz's warm, unhurried lyricism. Blending Bonf?'s originals with works by Ant?nio Carlos Jobim, the album deepens the evolving dialog between Brazilian songcraft and American jazz phrasing, with Bonf?'s nylon-string guitar providing a subtle rhythmic and harmonic anchor and Toledo adding textural and emotional nuance. Featuring Jobim on several tracks, the session captures bossa nova's transition from global sensation to mature artistic exchange, resulting in one of Getz's most atmospheric and enduring Verve recordings. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Focus, recorded at Webster Hall in New York City and released in 1961 on Verve Records, stands as a singular entry in saxophonist Stan Getz's discography. Focus pairs Getz's expressive tenor saxophone with a string orchestra conducted by Hershy Kay. Getz's parts were entirely improvised, as he navigated pre-composed frameworks with melodic invention and emotional clarity. The album represents a true collaboration between Sauter and Getz, and a radical departure from the conventions of jazz Inchwith stringsInch albums of the time. Sauter's charts emphasize contrapuntal writing, rhythmic complexity, and harmonic ambiguity, while Getz - unedited and unrehearsed in the traditional sense - weaves a lyrical, instinctive line throughout. The result remains one of the most original and artistically daring projects in Getz's recorded legacy; the artist's favorite of all the records he made. The Verve Vault Series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. Album Tracks 1. I'm Late, I'm Late 2. Her 3. Pan 4. I Remember When 5. Night Rider 6. Once Upon a Time 7. Summer Afternoon
