About this product

Celebrated Canadian composer Andrew Staniland's latest recording project is comprised of three major vocal works Peter Quince at the Clavier on the poetry of Wallace Stevens, Execution Songs based on a folk ballad, and Earthquakes & Islands, a collaboration with Toronto poet Robin Richardson. In each of these cycles, Andrew crafts a psychological journey. He weaves soaring vocal lines and innovative textures in the piano. He creates bold and soul-searching atmospheres, utterly and unmistakably his own. He is not afraid to experiment with extremes of range, the resonant capacities of the grand piano, the twisting of harmonic pathways, in order to create sound worlds that reveal the truth of a poetic moment. His absolute reverence for text-setting is transformed into a meditation, a triangulation of musical, emotional, and spiritual thought. Composer Andrew Staniland has firmly established himself as one of Canada's most important and innovative musical voices. Described by Alex Ross in the New Yorker magazine as Inchalternately beautiful and terrifyingInch, his music is regularly heard on CBC Radio 2 and has been performed and broadcast internationally in over 35 countries. Andrew is the recipient of the 2009 National Grand Prize in EVOLUTION, presented by CBC Radio 2/Espace Musique and The Banff Centre, top prizes in the SOCAN young composers competition, and the 2004 Karen Keiser Prize in Canadian Music. As a leading composer of his generation, he has been recognized by election to the Inaugural Cohort of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists Royal Society of Canada in 2014. Andrew is currently on faculty at Memorial University in St John's, Newfoundland.

Various Artists - Contrasts - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The pieces contained in this album are not only the result of ten years work and their own matured performative proposal but also the challenge of approaching the 5 InchessentialInch pieces of the violin, clarinet and piano repertoire. Of course, we could talk of other widely interpreted pieces of great artistic value, but their authorship (5 big names of the 20th century music) give us credit on this selection. It is also of great interest the fact that, even though the 5 pieces were composed only 20 years apart (between 1919 and 1938, the inter-war period) they correspond with 5 completely different styles, serving as a wonderful summary of what happened in the history of art during that period. The works are beautifully performed here by Eduardo Raimundo, Mario Perez, and Francisco Escoda.

Sharon Kam is one of the world's leading clarinetists. For her debut album on Orfeo (and performing for the first time in this trio line-up), she delivers a dramatic, sharply contrasting programme that is presented chronologically. Performing with her brother Ori Kam (viola) and the pianist Matan Porat, the programme begins and ends with music by Mozart and Bartók, the latter's Contrasts producing possibly the most original and captivating contribution to the repertoire for this combination of instruments. In between are works by Schumann and Brahms that contain multi-layered biographical references and are closely related in their romantic spirit. InchSharon Kam is a clarinetist with an exceptionally wide expressive range.Inch (Edward Greenfield)
