About this product

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski is one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. To mark the 100th anniversary of this exceptional musician, MDG, in cooperation with DENON, is releasing a recording of the InchRomeo and JulietInch ballet suites, which Skrowaczewski recorded with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra in the 1990s at the Cologne Philharmonic Hall. Genius - Born in Lwów, Poland, (now Lviv, Ukraine), Skrowaczewski's musical talent was recognised and encouraged early. At the age of just 13, he performed Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto. Due to an injury he received during WW2, he had to give up his career as a pianist and instead had great success as a composer and conductor. Internationally sought-after, Skrowaczewski conducted in Europe, East Asia and the USA; he had long-lasting influence on the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. Drama - InchRomeo and JulietInch is one of Prokofiev's most popular works. Yet the ballet was initially regarded by the Bolshoi Theatre as InchundanceableInch. A few years later, it was premiered in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), by which time Prokofiev, aware of it's dramatic effect, had already arranged the music into three very effective concert suites. History - In the Tsarist Empire, Prokofiev was considered the enfant terrible of Russian music. And even in the Soviet Union, to which he had later returned after emigrating, his music struggled. His sometimes brusque tonal language with it's ferocious dynamics disturbed many a cultural bureaucrat. He died on the same day as Stalin, which was why there were neither flowers nor musicians at his funeral - instead, a recording of InchRomeo and JulietInch was played.

Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR - Romeo et Juliette, Op. 17 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

When 23-year-old Hector Berlioz saw Shakespeare's InchRomeo and JulietInch on stage for the first time in 1827, he was deeply moved by the experience, probably not least because of the Irish actress Harriet Smithson, who played Juliet. She became Berlioz's wife in 1833, and another six years later he completed his chorus-symphony InchRomeo et JulietteInch, Op. 17. InchRomeo et JulietteInch is by no means intended as an attempt to transpose Shakespeare's drama as faithfully as possible; not a single verse of Shakespeare's text was included in the libretto, which was written by the poet emile Deschamps based on Berlioz's drafts. When the Prologue refers to Shakespeare as the only person who knew the highest secret of poetry, it is clear that the listener is deliberately placed in Berlioz's perspective, whose imagination is ignited by Shakespeare's genius. As in the case of the InchHaroldInch symphony based on Byron, Berlioz adapts the original very freely. In both cases, he develops entire movements from episodes that are of only minor importance in the poem and adds scenes that do not appear there at all.The present live recording from 1982 showcases Gary Bertini at the peak of his career, conducting the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra of the SWR. An exquisite cast of singers - Alfreda Hodgson, Philip Langridge and John Shirley-Quirk - as well as internationally renowned choirs like the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the SWR Vokalensemble (known until 1998 as Sudfunk-Chor) accompany him in the performance of one of the most complex symphonic works of the Romantic era.

Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa - Romeo & Juliet, Op. 64 (Excerpts) Rimsky-Korsako - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

?The present comprises two works by Russian composers of differing generations, in music which has long been central to the repertoire of composer and conductor Álvaro Cassuto who is heard conducting the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra. Even before the Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet had made it to the stage, selections were heard in concert on both sides of the Atlantic, and various sequences continue to feature prominently in the orchestral repertoire. Although these sometimes take the guise of one of the three orchestral suites, it has become more common to select freely from across these or even from the overall ballet. Establishing dramatic and musical continuity within this context is more difficult than might be supposed, to which end Cassuto had devised his own selection on this present recording. Rimsky-Korsakov's mastery of orchestration is heard at it's most impressive in the Russian Easter Festival Overture, (composed at much the same time as his symphonic suite Scheherazade). Cast in a loose sonata-form design, the piece falls into three main sections which the composer prefaced with quotations from Psalms, Gospel of Mark and his own description of the Easter celebration. Almost all it's themes are derived from the Obikhod, the collection of liturgical chants with which every Russian would then have been familiar - not least the composer, even though he had long since become a non- believer and viewed this music strictly as a source to be utilized in his own compositions. These two live recordings were originally broadcast by Antena 2, Portuguese Radio and Television in the mid-1990s. This album is the recording's first commercial .

Vaccaj / Cortellazzi - Giulietta E Romeo - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Nicola Vaccaj belonged to the Neapolitan school pupil of Paisiello and contemporary of Rossini, whose fame somehow obscured his own, he was well known and appreciated at his time, to the point that an extract from the last Act of his Giulietta e Romeo was chosen to substitute the same aria in Bellini's I Capuleti e I Montecchi for an 1832 performance and this shift has remained common practice until the end of the 19th century. Therefore it's hard to believe that Vaccaj's most notable success was neglected for such a long time as it Inchis an opera that could easily hold it's own among the better-known works in the bel canto canon. It has taut plot, with a strong libretto, written by Romani, and is full of well-constructed ensemble piecesInch(Alan Neilson - Operawire) Within a traditional, 16th century setting, director Cecilia Ligorio choses to convey a sense of doom and tragedy which the entire work is imbued with, from the choice of costumes and settings to the stage lighting. InchIt really was a well-paced, and visually pleasing production that successfully captured the love and hatred which drives the narrative forward.Inch (Alan Neilson - Operawire)
