Stefan Aeby Trio - To the Light - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The previous album of the leading Czech big band InchConcept Art OrchestraInch received the Andel Award in 2015 for the best jazz album of the year. The recording entitled InchThe Prague SixInch featured the work of six Czech important young authors the band's conductor and trumpeter Štepánka Balcarová, saxophonist Luboš Soukup, pianists Vít Krištan, Martin Brunner and Tomáš Sýkora, and trombonist Jan Jirucha junior. The same six authors are behind this new album entitled InchGrown-up ChristmasInch. The programme has been performed several times in concert and comprises originally arranged Christmas carols and songs loosely inspired by Christmas (for example poems by Czech poets Jan Skácel and Frána Šrámek). Concept Art Orchestra has invited singers Dan Bárta, Markéta Foukalová and Milan Cimfe to collaborate on the project. Although the binding theme for all the compositions is, indeed, Christmas, this is not a classical seasonal recording which only has a potential to enhance the Christmas atmosphere, but will bring joy throughout the year. Christoph Irniger, a prodigious stylist with a warm sound, presents the third album with his band Pilgrim on Intakt Records. With InchCrosswindsInch the saxophonist who relishes adventure and surprise delivers a cultivated studio album. Multi-layered, subtle and melodically entangled, the eight pieces radiate a wondrous, atmospheric tranquility. A highly nuanced music with a magical sound. Peter Margasak writes in the liner notes InchCrosswinds - this new, gorgeously considered, but luxuriantly open new recording by tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger's Pilgrim - is palpably more relaxed on the surface than the quintet's previous albums, yet beneath that veneer of calm is intensely focused and rigorous interplay as well as a level of risk-taking. Irniger and his bandmates have developed a richly contemporary sound that melds ideas from some of the most harmonically advanced thinkers in the US with a distinctly European flavor heard most explicitlyInch.
