Storm Shell - Deluxe Weatherproof 44” Outdoor TV Enclosure with Full Motion TV Mount Included - Black

I’ve always wanted a TV on my patio but the cost of a weatherproof TV’s wasn’t in the budget and the enclosures I found were also too expensive for me to justify. This Storm Shell enclosure is reasonably priced and has some nice features. One of my favorite things is it actually comes with some printed instructions. I didn’t have to download them and print them myself. Installation was straightforward with only a few issues. Unfortunately, I was installing this during a heavy rainstorm and I had to build the wall I was planning to mount this on, so I rushed it a little. I was initially planning to use an old 42” TV I had recently replaced but that TV had an unusual VISA bolt pattern (600 x 400) so I couldn’t use it. I ended up buying an inexpensive 43” Westinghouse Roku TV that fills the enclosure nicely. First, all the metal parts need to be installed onto the plastic shell. This includes the locking latches, the included power strip, some hangers for the lid, a fan and the logo plate on the cover. The included hardware isn’t the best but mostly OK. I did strip one screw head for one of the latches before it was fully seated. The latches themselves work fine but the locks can be finicky. It’s nice that they include 4 keys. The included power strip is of decent quality but I don’t think it has any surge protection. The included fan looks like it’s industrial grade but mine is very noisy. Unfortunately, something is rubbing. For now, I’ve unplugged it and I will take a closer look at it when I get a chance. If it’s a defective fan, I will contact the manufacturer. Next you install the shell onto the wall. I had just built the wall I was installing this on so I knew exactly where the studs were. It’s basically install the 2 top bolts – level, then hang the rear shell and install the 2 lower bolts. Next, you need to install the swinging TV mounting arm to the wall. It’s just 3 bolts. Just make sure you install it right side up. There is a clear diagram in the instructions and a big arrow on the mount itself. Unfortunately, I missed both of these indicators and mounted mine upside down because I was rushing. Luckily, I was mounting this to a wood stud wall and not a masonry wall. Reversing it was easy enough. Finally, you need to install the rails to the TV. This includes finding the center of the TV top to bottom, lining up some holes on the rails with that centerline and installing the screws. Once that’s done, hang the TV on the arm and fasten 2 screws. The arm moves easily if you need it to. There is an angle adjustment so if you mount it high up, the TV can be angled down for a more direct viewing angle. However, you need a bolthead screwdriver or other tool to make this adjustment. It is not tool free. You can try to tighten the bolts so the TV can be angled with some force but I find that the bolts eventually loosen. The back panel will reflect some sound from the TV speakers making them seem a little louder. There are a couple of things that would improve this enclosure for me. Mounting the power strip so the outlets face down would make it easier to see the power button and outlet receptacles. It would also protect the strip if water did somehow drip from the top of the enclosure down to the power strip. My biggest concern is spiders getting into the enclosure. There are 2 places they can enter easily, the fan and the grommet for the power cord. I will likely try to install a screen over the fan and seal the grommet to prevent them from coming in. I do like that there is an included fan for hot weather. It would be nice if there was a heater option for cold weather as well. Is this the best enclosure? No. Is it a decent one for the money? Yes. Because the cover is black, it needs to be removed and installed for watching and protecting. It’s a little more work than having an outdoor TV, an enclosure with a clear cover or an enclosure with a flip up lid. It is best for a TV that will only be used occasionally and not in wet weather. For the right application, this is fine.

After having my deck redone so the patio beneath stays dry, I added a tv and was initially going to use a soft cover. Although it works I preferred something that was a bit more sturdy and secure. The Storm Shell took care of both. My case will hold up to a 44” tv and comes complete with the enclosure case, the tv mount, power strip and even a case fan. Starting with the installation, it took me about 45 minutes start to finish and art of that time was because I didn’t grab all the tools to start. Instructions are easy to follow and once you find the studs, the rest goes pretty quick. All the screws and bolts are included for mounting to different surfaces including concrete/brick. For convenience, I attached everything before taking the back shell outside to mount. This included the latch/locks, fan and powerstrip mount. After mounting the back to the wall, I installed the mount for the tv and then final adjustments to the tv brackets. Because of where my power outlets are located I had to add a 6’ extension cord but it hid well behind the case. Only complaint is with the fan, it runs constantly. I would think it would only come in once a preset temp is reached. Where I am it was 30 degrees so there was no need for the fan to run. Lastly, the locking latches make sure that the tv is secure when not in use. Four keys are provided. Very happy with the function and features.

I installed the Storm Shell 44” Outdoor TV Enclosure on the wooden privacy divider wall on my patio that’s exposed to the elements. There’s only been light rain since I installed it, but the heavy cardboard I inserted as a tester was still dry and rigid so I’m hopeful that my 32” TV will stay dry as well. The plastic is of decent quality and the locking latches keep the shell and cover nice and tight. The instructions could be a little clearer on a couple of things, but despite that, overall installation of the storm shell itself took me just over an hour. One flaw is the pre-drilled holes for the cover hooks are only just a hair smaller than the head of the screws themselves. For extra stability, I added washers behind the screws. Another modification I made was during the fan installation. Before attaching the fan to the shell, I secured a piece of screen to the backside of it to help keep creepy crawlers out. It would be nice if a protective screen for the fan could be an included part. Another improvement would be if the cord grommet was self-sealing or molding for a tight seal once the cord/cords have been fed through. This would also help keep out both bugs and moisture. I haven’t had the Storm Shell long and of course, time will tell how well it holds up to the roller coaster weather of the Midwest, but as of now, I’d say it’s an investment worth making.

The description of this enclosure might be a little daunting at first, but I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of assembly. Its all pretty straight forward and comes with detailed instructions. If you've ever installed a TV mount before, this will be relatively simple. The only hard part beyond that is the mounting of the box to a structure. I recommend when installing this to make sure that where ever you are mounting this, you verify there is structure behind it. Do not mount this to a wall without verifying that it is going into a stud on the other side, or without building a brace behind it and mounting the brace to the studs of the structure. If mounting to concrete follow the appropriate steps for lag bolts into concrete (I didn't, but I can see this being a concern). You also in that case might need different bolts, but I didn't try that. I feel these are pretty critical steps in order to prevent structural damage to a house. If installed into plywood (generally whats behind siding on houses, if not particle board), then this will over time damage that with the added weight of a TV in it. On to the box itself. I picked this up to help facilitate training that I do at work. I teach classes "in the field". That means I needed a box that was durable enough to survive transportation with other equipment, could easily be setup in the field, and survive through adverse weather (cause it happens). I understand where the manufacturer was going with the box, but I do wish it was a bit more sturdy. There is a good bit of flex to the material. This generally isn't a bad thing, but in my use case I feel I need to be more careful when moving or transporting it. The flexibility of it though I do think will be beneficial for adverse weather. You don't want a hard/brittle plastic standing up to bad weather. Things such as debris or hail would break/split the plastic with enough force. So the design as it is I feel is fine for a stationary outdoor TV. One concern I did have with the box, and one that would make me pause using it as a permanent outdoor TV enclosure is the lack of a weather seal. This enclosure uses water channels to route water from the top to the bottom of the box to keep the inside dry. When sealed up if water comes in contact it will simply route down the box. The concern I have with this is that works fine for fluids, but not humidity. The case has a built in exhaust fan to keep the TV cool and it would keep humidity circulating, but I don't see how this case keeps devices at a reasonable humidity level for more humid environments. I would personally be concerned for devices over a long period of time in this building up mold on internals. I haven't experienced this personally, but without an outdoor rated TV this could be an issue. Outside of that, this product has been great so far. Have only got to use it once. I didn't experience any bad weather to see how well the water channels worked, but the enclosure protected the TV through transport. The only other thing I would mention is that make sure you buy the correct box for the size of TV you are using. The box says 44-55 inches on the box, but it also states in red letters 44". I believe this is because they offer different boxes for different size TVs, but make sure you buy based on the red letters, not the range listed. I attempted a 55in in this enclosure because the box stated that was the top end of the range, but only a 42 would fit.
