?Complete Works for Flute and Strings Vol. 3. Ferdinand Ries presents himself as a master of chamber music with the three extraordinarily imaginatively composed works on Vol. 3 of our edition of his complete works for flute and strings. On the one hand he is firmly rooted in the tradition of his great classical models. On the other hand he takes the step to a poetic musical worldview that by no means corresponded to the mainstream between 1815 and 1830. Some time before Novalis had written »The world must be romanticized.« Along with two more flute quartets designed very much in the classical style but also already displaying newer musical expressive forms, his only, highly emotional Flute Quintet op. 107 is heard here, a work composed by Ries in London in 1818. As in the great majority of flute quintets, it is scored with two violas, which results in a practically orchestral sound picture. The composer makes manifold use of the option of setting the stringed instruments in opposition to the flute. Nevertheless, the flute is treated as the equal partner of the stringed instruments, which all take part in the changing functions of solo and accompaniment. Here too the Ardinghellos offer »dialoguing that is finely heard out, trim playing with a minimum of vibrato, and the most careful, delightful phrasing« (klassik-heute of Vol. 3 in March 2019). Ready for You opens with terrific swingy dance numbers by a spirited singer and band that has put a spit shine and Polish on it's ensemble musicianship. These wonderfully robust tunes will set you jazzing for romance and hurly-burly speakeasy steppin out. Starting with the title track (I m Getting Myself Ready for You a rare Cole Porter song originally by Blanche Calloway - Cab's sister), you ll be rocking to the rafters and then Bear Hugging your baby. From there, the tunes roll into new stylistic water with steamy Riverboat shuffles and a hot southern style repertoire specifically designed for and being performed in intimate historic settings in the US. New to the mix, this break out trio featuring Janet and her first Parlor Boy - John Reynolds who's known for his expert whistling and hotter-than-hell guitar and banjo playing. John provided accompaniment on her 1st CD Come Into My Parlor and is joined with maestro violinist Benny Brydern (Hot Club Quartet) a Parlor Boy regular. This little threesome performs with tremendous drive utter simplicity. Along with the swinging & swaying there's dreamy romance tunes delivered with great arrangements and timeless lyrics by the sweet and vivacious Ms. Klein. As always there's plenty of variety with obscure movie tunes, a load of sassy Dixie mania, novelties and jazz age tales of bad behavior all mixed with a yummy plate of down home fun. Roland Wilson enjoys great esteem as a trumpeter and a cornett player who performs with his own ensemble, and as a musicologist his name stands for the rediscovery of many an early music rarity. On our new recording we hear two highly interesting works that once were (and today still are) ascribed to George Frideric Handel. Johann Mattheson, who was working on the setting of the same libretto in 1723, wrote a detailed review of this Passion probably first performed in 1704 and published anonymously. Although Mattheson does not mention the Inchworld-famousInch man by name, his choice of words repeatedly offers clear references, for example, when he states that the inscription Pilate had put on the cross caused him Inchnew businessInch (Inchneue HändelInch). Mattheson doubtless knew exactly who the composer was, and everything that he describes is a perfect match for Handel. For me, there is a lot in the score that recalls the mature Handel while sounding very much like a young man who was then in quest of his individual style. The same applies to the chorale cantata InchAch Herr, mich armen Sünder,Inch a work certainly suggesting an even earlier date of composition. This new recording by the early music specialists of Musica Fiata and an ensemble of soloists brings this wonderful music to life with fantastic tonal homogeneity and balance, technical finesse, and historical knowledge.
