The Hungarian conductor Ferenc Fricsay was considered to be the man for modernism when, in 1948, he was appointed Chief Conductor of the RIAS Symphony Orchestra that had just recently been founded. Thus it was only logical for him to focus on the latest works by Richard Strauss the Oboe concerto and the Duet concertino for clarinet, bassoon and strings, both of which the composer created after World War II. Despite their retrospective musical language, these pieces at that time belonged to the most topical works of contemporary music production. Also, the small instrumentation presented the opportunity for Fricsay to train the soloistic potential of his musicians. The remarkable level that Fricsay, in such a short time, was able to guide his young orchestra to is also to be heard in the recordings of Till Eulenspiegel and the Burleske where Fricsay's unsentimental, anti-romantic interpre-tation is astonishing. The present is an album of piano transcriptions of works by Johann Strauss I and II, Kritz Kreisler, and Franz Schubert. The arrangers include great pianists such as Sergei Rachmaninoff, Moriz Rosenthal, and Carl Tausig. Dr. Muen Wei, a native of China, has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist, and jazz pianist. She has been applauded by critics for her Inchdelicate playingInch and Inchadmirable virtuosic skills.Inch(The News-Gazette) She has been guest soloist under the baton of Ian Hobson, Donald Schleicher, and Xiaoying Zheng. As a chamber musician, Dr. Wei has collaborated with great musicians such as Lynn Harrell, Henry Gronnior, Peter Lloyd, Ko Iwasaki and Stan Sharp, ?among others. Gluck Opera Gala is a 2-album compilation of highlights from seven previously released albums on the ORFEO tag. It contains excerpts from Gluck's semi seria opera Alceste (album 1, tracks 1-7); his reformist operas Iphigénie en Tauride (album 1, tracks 8-14), Orfeo ed Euridice (album 2, tracks 1-9) and Paride ed Elena (album 2, tracks 10-16); and two works in a more light-hearted vein, Le Cinesi (album 1, tracks 15-16) and Les Pélegrins de la Mecque (album 2, tracks 17-23).
