Daptone Records is proud to present the latest offering from producer extraordinaire, Victor Axelrod. Initially voiced over a midi demo at Axelrod's Don't Trip Studio, InchOne Step AheadInch is one of the last recordings made during Sugar Minott's exceptionally influential career. The backing track, courtesy of The Inversions, was cut at Diamond Mine studio during the same session as the rocksteady update of Bob & Gene's InchI Can Be CoolInch. With Axelrod at the helm the team transforms the cult classic ballad, originally recorded by Aretha Franklin, into an ethereal piece of rocksteady magic. In addition to writing a wealth of original material, Sugar Minott had a deep appreciation and a passion for not only Jamaican ska, rocksteady, and reggae (which he helped develop) but also American soul and pop music. He brought enduring versions of Michael Jackson's InchGood Thing Going,Inch The Persuaders InchLove Gonna Pack UpInch and Dionne Warwick's InchA House Is Not A HomeInch to the reggae idiom. InchOne Step AheadInch fits perfectly in this tradition, effortlessly bridging the gap between American pop and Jamaican soul.A1. One Step AheadB1. One Step Ahead (Instrumental)

In Latin, the word Gemini denotes Inchtwo togetherInch or InchtwinsInch. In astrological terms, Geminis are noted for, amongst other things, being curious and versatile. For San Diego's 9-piece (mostly) instrumental combo The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, Jazz and Funk have always been the two genres that they've consistently and effectively melded together, forming the bedrock of their sound. Exercising their stylistic curiosity and versatility, they've expanded upon this foundation on their new 11-song long player for Colemine Records.Recorded between late 2021 and early 2024 at The Kitchen II in their homebase of Lemon Grove, California, SFSE steer their Inchintrospective party musicInch into fresh sonic realms. While their breakbeat-heavy brand of funk-soul-jazz is still the cornerstone of their sound, as displayed in tunes such as InchMakin' MovesInch, InchThe GrifterInch & InchDon't TripInch, they've begun to take more and more cues from library music labels such as KPM Music, spiritually-leaning jazz labels such as Tribe & Black Jazz Records and exotica-adjacent jazz artists such as Cal Tjader and Dorothy Ashby. Now leaning more into the InchintrospectiveInch part of their sound, particularly on InchMother EarthInch, InchFreddieInch and the title track, they evoke the spirits of Freddie Hubbard, Phil Ranelin, Wendell Harrison, Bubbha Thomas, Chester Thompson and even Cannonball Adderley at his headiest & most cosmic (listen to Adderley's InchSoul ZodiacInch & InchSoul of The BibleInch albums for reference). InchCorporatocracyInch takes it a step further with an extended tabla solo, which floats in and rides the percussive wave before kicking into it's funk-driven, modal vibe. With their current lineup of Tim Felten on keys, Jake Najor on drums, Omar Lopez on bass, Kiko Cornejo Jr on conga/percussion, Aquiles InchLitoInch Magana on guitar, Wili Fleming on trombone, Sh
