Susana Baca - Susana Baca - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Susana Baca's newest collection of music (and her first in 4 years) Travesias, chronicles the songstress' exploration of oral traditions from Africa, Haiti, France, Ireland, and Italy in addition to her native Peru. Working with Susana for the third time, producer Craig Street helmed Travesias, cultivating arrangements that have been pared downed to reveal the steadfast rhythm of Susanna's longtime band members Juan Cotito Medrano, David Pinto and Sergio Valdeos. Gilberto Gil, Marc Ribot, Kevin Breit and the Tosca Strings are among the guests included on the album. Simple arrangements combined with Susana's distinctive voice translate the essence of each song's sentiment of love and struggle.

For decades, Grammy Award winner Susana Baca has represented Peruvian music to the world. Here, Susana gives voice to her life-long immersion in the music of the African Diaspora. The songs of African descendants in Cuba, Argentina, New Orleans, and across the world... The rhythms of forro, cumbia, tango... AFRODIASPORA is a travel log that spans centuries and continents through the voice of one of the world's most celebrated singers.

Her upbringing in a coastal town in the south of Lima, called Chorrillos, revolved around a core of musical celebrations where she would watch and join in with the adults who sang and danced. On SEIS POEMAS, Susana takes US deeper into her own poetic history, with the moving works of Latin American and Spanish poets like Pablo Neruda, Cesar Vallejo, Cesar Calvo, Mario Benedetti, and Federico Garcia Lorca, lovingly placing their lyrics in understated arrangements of guitar, flute, violin and cajon. It's been said before that Baca's voice is like a quiet storm, but it's worth repeating. Like all storms in their myriad manifestations, Baca's restrained tempest, transcends Chorrillos. It transcends her people's history, Peru, her personal story, and even language. On SEIS POEMAS Baca deftly melds the quotidian fabric of poetry and age-old songs passed down orally with a universal sound that enthralls the listener no matter where they're from.
