About this product
Imagine a circuit. A closed shape, carved pathway across components and obstacles, this signal yielding a set of tones, new sounds and subtle interactions, noisy strings and hard-panned vocals holding solid before whoosh something changes. A low note lifts and glides away. Just that quick, you are inside a song. Dizzy Magic is Sophie Weil's fourth LP as Syko Friend, the solo guise that's codified her output through a decade-plus of operations in the latter-day USA underground-itself a classification so vague and genre-blurred that it'd be almost meaningless if not for the way Weil's project has done continuous honor to certain clarifying commitments guitars and amps, feedback and lyrics, freecomposition and locked-in songcraft. In it's twin entanglements with tradition and experimentation, it's richly organic sonic palette, and it's effortless intimacy, the music of Syko Friend is instantly recognizable. Put one of her records onand you get it. On Dizzy Magic, Weil has maintained those parameters but refined them, tightening the studiocraft and expanding arrangements into dreamily broad-spectrum events, feelings rendered sharp and detailed, whether it's a solo guitar ride or one of several full-band stompers featuring additional instrumental contributions by Evan Burrows, Hank Doyle, and Henry Barnes. This record is clear-eyed as it reaches previously unseen expanses, a grand gesture in touch with it's smallest components. It's a testament to Weil's devotion to continuous exploration; to the cathartic capacities of guitar music; and to the collaborations and efforts of writing, recording, and touring that underlie the ongoing push for self-expression on the margins. That's where I met Weil, anyway, a long time ago, somewhere out between nodes on the underground map, musicians running the route night after night, figuring we were keeping the spirit moving. Originally released in 1969 in a quantity so low that it was once rumored to not even exist (seriously). While groups like The Holy Modal Rounders were turning traditional American folk on it's head in the states throughout the 60s, The Maglory Dengluch's approach took influence from the Scottish and Irish. Armed with banjos, tin whistles, kazoos, and jugs they recorded the now infamous album to tape. Officially released for the first time since the storied 99-copy, 1969 run on the long defunct Granta tag and includes exhaustive new liner notes from the band and a download card with the entire album as well as five bonus tracks recorded during the same session.1. Syko Friend's third LP, 'The Code,' wanders endless margins and endless centers, reveling in every sound, every feeling, every word. It balances the vastness of choice with the certainty of an individual path. This path belongs to Sophie Weil, the sole member of Syko Friend, who acknowledges this swing of extremes, this movement from the center to the edge InchI do want people to understand what's going on,Inch she affirms, Inchbut I know it's weird.InchWeil plays guitar like it's a faucet, the warm roundness of bathwater just a half-turn from a furious scalding, another full turn from the whole-body shiver of winter rain. Her foundation is a roaming kind of fingerpicking, the nimble, leave-only-footprints comfort of a regular hike. But Weil knows the switchbacks and undergrowth too, constricting the guitar into a staticky bludgeon, or clearing out all melody for the raw nerve glower of a single minor chord. It's an exemplary kind of American Primitive guitar work, the quiet revelation of intensely personal, timely expression found through century-old folk and blues forms. Weil's vocals-curious, fervent, dynamic and certain-fit perfectly with her playing. It's the voice of an observer, of a listener. Many lifetimes are woven through this singing, slight modulations and lung-full bursts of sound revealing half-conversations, slight revelations, world-obliterating moments of connection.

Syko Friend is the solo project of Minneapolis based artist Sophie Weil - - well known to the Minneapolis underground for her work with Tips For Twat, Joint Custody and Dance Troupe Roxanne. After two self-released, boundary exploring, cassette tapes, Syko Friend has paired with Mindrider Records to bring you her vinyl debut, Problem Child. This record lurches out of the bleak Minnesota winter with germanium fuzz strong in hand. It is a slow moving, one woman show, honest and raw. It is unforgiving, and transforms from end to end. This is Les Rallizes without the sunglasses. This is music from the heart and from straight through it. Candle-lit and exhausted, this is Sophie staying quenched in a dry desert.
