In the process of making this of unrecorded or neglected works for oboe and piano, intriguing connections began to surface between three composers. In 1973, the year I was born, the organist Richard Elfyn Jones gave the premiere of Arnold Cooke's Organ Sonata No.1 in the presence of the composer, in Cardiff University's Concert Hall, and 46 years later in 2019, I premiered Richard Elfyn Jones' Oboe Sonata in his presence. At Cardiff University while I was an undergraduate, I studied Harmony and Counterpoint with Richard Elfyn Jones, and performed the Oboe Sonata written by Cooke's teacher, Hindemith, in my Final Recital, in the same hall, standing next to that same pipe organ which 46 years earlier was used to premiere Cooke's Sonata. (Catherine Tanner Williams) This recording of Arnold Cooke's two lyrical Oboe Sonatas is the first for many years, having previously been recorded by it's dedicatees. The album also features three world premiere recordings The Viva Altea! Sonata for Oboe and Piano, and oboist Catherine Tanner Williams' own works Luminous and Darkness Falling.

Not known for his acoustic work, Buddy Guy unplugs for a rare album-length excursion into folk blues. The guitarist gets down and dirty with 12 tracks that sound like they were recorded after hours in his living room or on his back porch. Guy's stinging leads are still evident as is his emotive voice, but both are less flamboyant in the unplugged setting. Accompanied by spare stand-up bass and brushed drums, Guy sounds nearly supernatural on covers from Skip James (InchHard Time Killing FloorInch), Johnny Shines (InchMoanin' and Groanin'Inch), Son House (InchLouise McGheeInch), and John Lee Hooker (InchSally MaeInch) among others. It's a low-key, low-down affair made for late nights, rainy days, and the saddest of moods. Buddy Guy is just as convincing here, arguably more so, as on his barnstorming electric albums, making Blues Singer one of the bravest and most poignant albums in his catalogue. Blues Singer is available as a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on translucent red coloured vinyl and includes a 4-page booklet.
