About this product
The idea for this developed during a recording of the Fantasy No. 7, and quickly established it's own momentum. What began as a spontaneous thought experiment soon demanded fulfillment, and morphed swiftly into the desire to take part in the reawakening of this music. What followed was months of intensive dialogue with, and examination of, the 12 Fantasies. What would rank as of the greatest possible adventures for a gambist? To approach Telemann's 12 Fantasies which, having long lain dormant, were recently rediscovered. This is music which paints pictures, is sometimes melancholy and longing, sometimes wild, and often humorous - an inexhaustible wellspring of ideas, moods, sounds and colors.

Telemann was a musician and composer who lived and worked in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, Frankfurt/Main, and Hamburg. He is considered the most important German composer of the late baroque era, and an extraordinarily productive musician with an oeuvre of over 3,600 works which cover all genres, including opera. He was one of the few artists of his era who was well respected during his lifetime, and he was able to live comfortably from his work as a musician. He was entirely self-taught, playing a variety of instruments, including the recorder, the violin, and the harpsichord. He was also a great proponent of the recorder, which is why he is often described as the greatest recorder composer. His work for the 'flauto dolce' includes solo concerts, suites, sonatas, trio sonatas, as well as extended recorder parts in oratorios, passions, and cantatas. Of special significance are the Inch12 Fantasias for Solo Flute,Inch published in Hamburg in 1733, which, along with the Inch36 Fantasias for Harpsichord,Inch the Inch12 Fantasias for Solo Violin,Inch and the Inch12 Fantasias for Viola da Gamba,Inch complement Telemann's oeuvre for solo instruments without bass accompaniment. The Inch12 FantasiasInch recorded on this album are based on a transposition for treble recorder which is stored in the library of the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Brussels.

Telemann wrote a portfolio of fantasies for unaccompanied instruments, and in addition to those for violin, keyboard and viola da gamba was the set of Twelve Fantasies for Solo Flute, dating from 1732/33. Although written with an eye to the amateur or student market, these are highly inventive and original works. With their eloquent melodies, frugal writing, and contrasts of register and phrasing they make an enchanting set, played here by Giovanni Roselli on a conical ring-key flute, which has quieter keys allowing for more elegant trills. Born in Italy, Giovanni Roselli has performed worldwide, and in 2009 was invited to play at the concert for Sir James Galway's 70th birthday celebrations at the Teatro alla Scala.
