Telemann / Bruggen - Early Recordings 1 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Dutch flautist Frans Bruggen (1934-2014) was one of the main discoverers and champions of the recorder during the twentieth century, and is considered to be one of the artists that made this instrument popular and accessible to young people. His virtuosity and technique were unique, and made his performances of music from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries unforgettable, showing his audiences that the recorder could be an expressive and evocative instrument. This IDIS collects a series of very rare recordings of this great artist his archives- none of these recordings have ever been released on modern mediums. This album features the first recording of the Giuseppe Sammartini Concert in F major- a masterpiece of the recorder literature- that was recorded by Bruggen with the Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra when he was only twenty-eight years old.

Telemann / Barockwerk Hamburg / Hochman - Inauguration Cantatas - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The three compositions brought together on this demonstrate how Telemann could be relied on to compose not only church music for ordinary religious services but also works for extraordinary sacred events and special occasions. Telemann's dedicatory music for the church in the St. Hiob-Hospital in Hamburg, InchKommt, lasset uns anbeten,Inch is scored for an ensemble that is noticeably smaller than those of his other compositions for the dedication of churches. This does not reflect lesser status but owes to the small church space. As a result, the composition convinces the listener with it's intimacy, while the ensemble limited to a few musicians contributes significantly to the exquisite impression made by this lovingly designed music displaying many beautiful details, above all in the melodic and harmonic spheres. By contrast, the stylistic modernity and wealth of imagination in Telemann's sung poem InchGeschlagene Pauken, auf!Inch - which has been recorded here for the first time - makes us sit up and take notice. And the motet InchLaetare iuvenis in iuventute tua,Inch composed in 1758 to a text from the Old Testament, numbers among the few works by Telemann attesting to his activity in the educational field as the music director of Hamburg's Latin School (the Johanneum).
